Caressed by Ice (Psy-Changeling, #3) by Nalini Singh ~ Review

Source:  Purchased audio

Nalini Singh explores new heights of sensuality, returning to the world of the Psy - where two people who know evil intimately must unlock the good within their icy hearts...

As an Arrow, an elite soldier in the Psy Council ranks, Judd Lauren was forced to do terrible things in the name of his people. Now he is a defector, and his dark abilities have made him the most deadly of assassins - cold, pitiless, unfeeling. Until he meets Brenna...

Brenna Shane Kincaid was an innocent before she was abducted - and had her mind violated - by a serial killer. Her sense of evil runs so deep, she fears she could become a killer herself. Then the first dead body is found, victim of a familiar madness. Judd is her only hope, yet her sensual changeling side rebels against the inhuman chill of his personality, even as desire explodes between them. Shocking and raw, their passion is a danger that threatens not only their hearts, but their very lives...

Review...

I'm on the third book and still loving this series!  I've missed paranormal so much.  And I so love shifters.  But this series is more than just shifter books.  It's a whole paranormal world that fits together and reflects much of our world.  Each book has it's own focus on a couple but the overall story of this world continues.  I love that there is the resolution of one piece of the story but the overarching story goes on.

If you haven't read this series but love paranormal, what are you waiting for?  I have been sucked in and thrown out my reading schedule to fit these in.  That's where the audio has come in.  I've been able to fit in listening as I do other things and it's perfect.  I love this narrator.  I can tell which character is speaking, I can see the pictures in my mind and I'm not focused on the reader.  It's the highest praise I can give - she makes the story better.

This world is made up of three races.  The psy, the changelings, and the humans.  There are many different kinds of psy with wide ranges of psychic powers and abilities.  They have silenced their emotions as a way to do away with violence but the results have caused other issues.  The changelings come in many different packs of shifters.  I like that.  I've always liked more than wolf shifters.  This story is the first one that focused more on the wolfs.  I am so interested in them.  I love their alpha, Hawke and can't wait for his book.  The human are there but not really part of things so far.  That could change.

This is Brenna and Judd's story.  The psychically damaged Breanna was a victim in an earlier story.  Still not healed, she is drawn to the emotionless Judd who helped with her recovery.  But there is so much more going on for their story.  Judd's ice cannot simply be melted away.  And Breanna has yet to deal with the aftermath of her confinement.  It's enjoyable and interesting to watch their story unfold.  I was surprised and intrigued as it went along.  Love it when a story doesn't go where I expect.

The writing is so good.  I'm not a third person writing kinda reader but I love this one.  While the story moves all over, it's always from someones POV even if it's third person.  That means I feel those connections with characters that I need so much.  And because the story can flow from any character, we see things from the previous couples in the first two books and through the eyes of the killer.

I'm excited to start the next book.  I can't get enough of this world.  If you haven't read this author, you need to.  She's just so good.

  2. I'v heard good things about this series, but just haven't taken time to fit it in. Audio books have become my favorites lately, so I think when I finish up the series I am on, I just might start the audios for this one. Great Review!
