What Are You Currently Reading? (9)

Happy Halloween, friends! It has been too long since I did one of these posts, so I thought now was the perfect time to fix that. Since my last post, I FINALLY finished Midnight Sun...and subsequently wished it wasn't over because I miss it already. I've also read many books on KU. Because of course.

Okay, update done. Now let's talk about what I'm reading this weekend!

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire (Blood and Ash, #2)A Betrayal…

Everything Poppy has ever believed in is a lie, including the man she was falling in love with. Thrust among those who see her as a symbol of a monstrous kingdom, she barely knows who she is without the veil of the Maiden. But what she does know is that nothing is as dangerous to her as him. The Dark One. The Prince of Atlantia. He wants her to fight him, and that’s one order she’s more than happy to obey. He may have taken her, but he will never have her.

A Choice...

Casteel Da’Neer is known by many names and many faces. His lies are as seductive as his touch. His truths as sensual as his bite. Poppy knows better than to trust him. He needs her alive, healthy, and whole to achieve his goals. But he’s the only way for her to get what she wants—to find her brother Ian and see for herself if he has become a soulless Ascended. Working with Casteel instead of against him presents its own risks. He still tempts her with every breath, offering up all she’s ever wanted. Casteel has plans for her. Ones that could expose her to unimaginable pleasure and unfathomable pain. Plans that will force her to look beyond everything she thought she knew about herself—about him. Plans that could bind their lives together in unexpected ways that neither kingdom is prepared for. And she’s far too reckless, too hungry, to resist the temptation.

A Secret…

But unrest has grown in Atlantia as they await the return of their Prince. Whispers of war have become stronger, and Poppy is at the very heart of it all. The King wants to use her to send a message. The Descenters want her dead. The wolven are growing more unpredictable. And as her abilities to feel pain and emotion begin to grow and strengthen, the Atlantians start to fear her. Dark secrets are at play, ones steeped in the blood-drenched sins of two kingdoms that would do anything to keep the truth hidden. But when the earth begins to shake, and the skies start to bleed, it may already be too late.

How much I've read: 65 pages. (still where I left off last time, just in paperback now!)

Thoughts: I'm still super excited to get into this one, and I think my chances of actually making progress have improved now that I'm not also reading Midnight Sun. Easier to make progress on one big beast of a paperback at a time than two. I'm especially eager to read this now that I opened the book to find the last page I read and got a peek at what happened so far--I love these characters!

And because I can't help myself but to read a paperback and an ebook, I'm also reading...

When She Dances by Ruby Dixon

I never expected to spend my days as a dancing girl… but it beats the alternative. In the window of a filthy space station cantina, I gyrate my hips and hope for better days.

When I’m bought by the most intimidating alien on Three Nebulas Station, those better days are on their way. Zakoar of the Broken Back is a cyborg who deals in black market prosthetics. He’s terrifying to look at, with a metal jaw and a fearsome demeanor. He intimidates everyone in the galaxy… except me.

Zakoar doesn’t want my name. In fact, he doesn’t want anything from me…except a little bed sport. In exchange for my willingness, he’ll take me to a human-friendly planet where I can live unafraid.

Love isn’t part of the bargain, but every moment that I spend with him, I learn more about the male beneath the metal…

…and I’m suddenly dreaming of a very different happy ever after for myself…

*Available through KindleUnlimited!*

How much I've read: like 2%

Thoughts: I've barely opened this one yet...like, I'm literally still in the sample instead of the full downloaded book from KU...but considering both Ruby Dixon's track record and how much I've enjoyed the previous Risdaverse books, I already know I'm going to like this one. When She Belongs is a contender for one of my favorite books of this year so I have high hopes When She Dances will at the very least be enjojyable. Plus, I was super intrigued by Zakoar when we met him before. Looking forward to diving more into it this weekend!

So that's what I plan to dig into this weekend. Now I'd love to know what y'all are reading?! :)

Shopping for a CEO's Baby by Julia Kent ~ Excerpt & Giveaway

Shopping For A CEO’s Baby
Julia Kent
(Shopping for a Billionaire, #16)
Publication date: October 27th 2020
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

It’s Andrew and Amanda’s turn… in duplicate

We’re having twins.

Twins.

Which means my shooters are stronger than my brother’s. I win.

Yeah, yeah, everyone can say it’s not a competition, but it is.

And we all know it.

Two babies at once means double the fun, and double the misery for my poor wife, Amanda. While I’m growing a Fortune 500 company, she’s growing two entire human beings out of nothing but orange cheese snacks and ice cream.

Do you have any idea how hard I’ve worked during this pregnancy, tracking down orange smoothies for her?

Not to mention being forced to Facetime into a childbirth class on perineal massage, rescuing Chuckles the cat from being shaved bald by my two-year-old niece, and fighting with a wife who has named the twins Lefty and Righty.

By the time we hit the ninth month, my entire world revolves around pleasing — and protecting — her.

Even if it means humiliating myself in the name of love.

Wait a minute. Wait a minute, now.

Hold on.

Is she the one who’s winning?

Andrew and Amanda are BACK in the newest New York Times bestselling Shopping series book as they “beat” Declan and Shannon in the baby competition, but at what cost? As their future awaits them in the form of twins, Amanda and Andrew face ghosts from the past with wit, humor, and most of all — plenty of love.

EXCERPT:

I look at my phone. Andrew.

I’ll be home for dinner. What do you want?

For the last few weeks, we’ve ordered takeout every single night, because I never know what my stomach will or won’t be able to handle. I close my eyes and ask myself what I want, and reply:

Grilled salmon with paprika. Cantaloupe. Sautéed carrots in honey and cumin.

He texts back: I see you’re sticking with the orange theme.

I send an emoji of someone an orange sticking out its tongue.

Will do, he replies. I’ll have Consuela make it and bring it home after the gym.

Then I get a heart.

Consuela owns a private restaurant in the Seaport District, the kind that you can’t know about unless you know someone who knows someone. It’s our special place, and since morning sickness has ravaged me, Consuela’s been gracious enough to meet my weirdo dietary needs.

She also takes it as a challenge. My palate has expanded considerably as a result of her driving mission to find new orange foods.

I reply with: You mean you’ll have Gina contact Consuela to do it all, and have Gerald pick it up and bring it to the house.

Same thing, he texts back.

“I love how you smile when you think about Andrew,” Mom says, making me look up from my phone.

“Huh?”

“You two are so in love.”

My smile broadens. “We are.”

She looks at my belly. “Those babies are very, very fortunate.”

“Billionaire’s kids,” I mutter.

“No. You could be penniless and they’d be so, so blessed. You and Andrew are going to be wonderful parents.”

“How do you know?”

Tenderness floods her face as she reaches for me. I stand and bend before her, her hand on my shoulder, eyes shining with something close to tears.

“Because you have such a good heart. You always did. You’re smart and sweet and you care about people and want to help them. And Andrew loves you deeply. I may not un-derstand his ambition, but I do see that he’s a loving man.”

EXCERPT:

“There’s the Santa house,” Shannon said, just as George growled menacingly. “What’s wrong, George?” That growl was never a good sign, and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.

I had a strong urge to turn around and walk back to the store. But my curiosity knew no bounds. I had to find out what was going on.

We stopped in front of Santa’s house, which was a bigger version of our booth except it really did look like a house right out of the North Pole. “Wow, they did a great job. It’s fancy,” I said.

George growled again. A knot formed in my stomach, twisting hard.

Shannon glanced at him and then me. “Ainsley? You don’t think…is something wrong?”

“I hope not,” I said. George had done this before and it had never been good news.

He barked and then did the high-pitched whine that told me something I really didn’t want to know.

“No,” I whispered.

“Ains?”

I took a deep breath and pulled my phone out of my pocket. “Hold on to George—tight.” After handing her the leash, I turned on the flashlight app on my phone.

“You’re freaking me out,” she said, as she gripped the leash tightly.

“I’m freaking myself out.” Opening the double doors to Santa’s house, I peeked inside.

My breath caught, and bile rose in my throat.

“Call my brother.” My voice was nothing more than a hoarse whisper. I forgot I had my phone in my hand. “What is it?”

The image of the man with the candy-cane-striped pole sticking out of his chest would be burned in my brain forever.

“Santa is dead.”

The problem with secrets is that they’re too easy to keep collecting.

Luna Allen has done some things she would rather no one ever know about. She also knows that, if she could go back in time, she wouldn’t change a single thing.

With three sisters she loves, a job she (mostly) adores, and a family built up of friends she’s made over the years, Luna figures everything has worked out the way it was supposed to.

But when one of those secrets involves the man who signs her paycheck, she can’t find it in her to regret it. Despite the fact that he’s not the friendliest man in the world. Or the most patient.

Sometimes there are things you’re better off keeping to yourself.

This doesn't have shit to do with Cooper's. This is Luna and Rip. This is me trying to get you to give me a chance. Understand me?"

I think I might be getting in an MZ reread mood, so I couldn't help but share one of my favorite parts of Luna and the Lie this week. Luna and Rip's slow burn never fails to hit the spot. I LOVE them together. So much sweetness and swoon.

The Brightest Night by Jennifer L. Armentrout ~ Review

The thrills, drama, and intrigue continue in the third installment of the Origin series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout.

He is the darkest star.
You are the burning shadow.
And together, you will bring about the brightest night.

Less than a year ago, Evelyn Dasher was a normal girl, living an unremarkable life.

Now, she's on the run, under the protection of the beautiful, deadly inhuman Luc. She's been betrayed by those who were closest to her. And she's learned truths about herself that she never saw coming--things she once knew, and was made to forget. Truths with devastating consequences. She's caught in the eye of the storm.

She is the eye of the storm.

4 1/2 stars

I am a huge Jennifer L. Armentrout fan.  The Brightest Night is my most anticipated read of the year and it did not disappoint.

This world has captivated me since I read the first book in the first series.  I love these characters.  They are so real to me.  So many of my favorites are all back together in this third book in this spinoff series.  There were some I'd hoped to never see again.  Yeah, that was a surprise.  But it was so nice to spend time with Kat and Daemon, Dee and Archer, and even Dawson and Beth.  Loved that Hunter is around a lot.  All these characters are comforting.  Old friends.  So many favorites make this a great read.

And this is a great read.  It's a hard book to put down because you just want to read and read.  There is so much going on with lots of hints being dropped.  I noted many a hint and saw part of it coming.  But really, it was a surprise.  And I love that.  I love all the good moments.  The happiness.  The growth.  The struggle.  The Luc moments.  But really the brilliance of this book is that the hints only add to the surprise.

I adore Luc.  His love for Evie is so strong.  He'll do anything to protect her.  The tender moments between them were numerous and appreciated.  I love spending time with these two.  They are perfect together.  Really, they are the reason this book is so hard to put down.  I just wanted to savor every moment they spent together.  I love Luc's silly pick-up lines.  I love how Evie is aware of the pain that lives in Luc and is trying to help him.  Luc is over protective.  Evie is coming into her own.  They are the amazing super couple of this world.  Once everything falls together, I expect they will be unstoppable together and Daedalus is not prepared for what they have unleashed.

Luc's comic relief is always welcome.  I love how he wants to buy a certain newborn a lama.  He always gives the most interesting gifts.  Think pet rock. Ha.  It's always nice to have Luc around.

The ending was intriguing.  Some will call it a cliffhanger.  I'm not one of them.  I lived through the Opal cliffhanger and this one didn't hit me like that.  I felt it coming.  And it didn't unsettle me.  It made me want book 4 like now but I trust this author to give me an epic book 4 that will tie this all together.  I trust there to be a happy for Evie and Luc...Nadia and Luc.

Trust.  Recently, I read a book 2 from a different author.  It was an experience that changed my reading habits.  Like Twilight got me back into reading, this book almost got me out of reading.  It came down to trust.  The author had broke my trust over her characters.  This author, Jennifer L. Armentrout, would NEVER break my trust over characters.  She may take her characters down a road I wish they didn't have to travel.  She may even Opal me but I trust her to do right by her characters.  Book 4 will be epic and I believe that.  I can't wait for the ride.

I have spent my entire life in the basement of my father’s church. My sadistic mother and god-fearing father believe I have the devil inside of me because I heal after their abuse. I’d accepted long ago I would die in the very place I’d been born without ever feeling the sun on my skin. Then one day, my mother took me from my father’s religious cult in the wake of his death. Nearly a week later, and after countless hours with her boyfriend Jed’s creepy remarks, I find myself in Washington State. I had only ever interacted with my parents and now Jed, so you can imagine my surprise when I ran smack dab into possibly the most handsome man in the world. He’s not alone though, there are intriguing and handsome men popping up everywhere in my life.

Except I shouldn’t be focusing on that. I should be preparing for my mother’s cruel hits. Preparing to run the minute I turn 18. Preparing to hide from Jed’s leering comments and uncomfortable stares. One interaction with this man and I feel like my entire life has been altered.

Five days until I turn 18. Five days until my mother realizes what happens when you keep a bird cooped up for too long, only to open its cage. Five days until I am out of here.

My problem? Everything inside of me tells me that those intriguing men are mine… and they seem to think the same.

This is a slow/medium burn fantasy RH that features a naive but strong MFC with a troubled past and a secret about what she really is. Come meet Maya and her protective and possessive dragon shifters! This book will be part of the Reborn series.

"I've got it," I responded as hot energy flashed through me. My dragon was way too fucking excited to show off. I pulled off my white polo as I took a moment to appreciate how stunning our little mate was, her eyes darkening upon seeing me as her cheeks turned bright red. I fucking loved that blush. I wanted to see that color all over her body.

I would also like to see her in a jacket. It was cold out.

This literally made me lol. It's cute!

We Don't Talk Anymore by Julie Johnson ~ Excerpt & Giveaway

We Don’t Talk Anymore
Julie Johnson
Publication date: October 27th 2020
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

For as long as I can remember, Archer Reyes has been by my side. My closest confidant. My truest ally. My best friend.

That is, until the summer we turned seventeen, when I started picturing him as something else entirely.

The love of my life.

I knew confessing my feelings wasn’t going to be easy; I had no idea he’d reject me so cruelly… or that he was only breaking my heart to save my life.

It’s been 365 days since I told my best friend I loved him.
365 days since he didn’t say it back.
365 days since he lied straight to my face.
WE DON’T TALK ANYMORE is a standalone new adult romance about first love, second chances, and the lengths we go to hold onto each other when everything falls apart…

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

EXCERPT:

It’s been 365 days since I told Archer Reyes I loved him.

365 days since he didn’t say it back.

Then again, it’s not like he’s said anything at all to me since that fateful day, or even looked me in the eyes during our handful of unfortunate, unavoidable encounters in a town that suddenly feels far too small for the both of us.

There was a time when we didn’t go more than a few hours without speaking. Now, a full year of silence yawns in the space between us. An entire turn around the sun, packed with experiences we haven’t whispered to one another in the rafters of the old boathouse, jammed full of memories made in each other’s absence.

He’s built a whole new life I know nothing about, surrounded by people who aren’t me. And, hey, maybe that’s partly my fault. It’s not like I’ve reached out, either. Frankly, I don’t think there’s much of anything left to say. Not after last summer.

I put my heart in his hands that hot July night — a fragile mess of hope and fear, skipping beats in the silence as I waited for his answer. And, with a single squeeze and a condescending smirk…he crushed it.

It’s been 365 days since I told my best friend I loved him.

A Stuck In Books Giveaway ~ ARC Ash & Bramble by Sarah Prineas

A prince.

A ball.

A glass slipper left behind at the stroke of midnight.

The tale is told and retold, twisted and tweaked, snipped and stretched, as it leads to happily ever after.

But it is not the true Story.

A dark fortress.

A past forgotten.

A life of servitude.

No one has ever broken free of the Godmother’s terrible stone prison until a girl named Pin attempts a breathless, daring escape. But she discovers that what seems to be freedom is a prison of another kind, one that entangles her in a story that leads to a prince, a kiss, and a clock striking midnight. To unravel herself from this new life, Pin must choose between a prince and another—the one who helped her before and who would give his life for her. Torn, the only thing for her to do is trade in the glass slipper for a sword and find her own destiny.
