Seduce (Succubus Kiss, #1)

Seduce (Succubus Kiss #1) by Jennifer Snyder

Source: Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Life isn’t so bad for succubus, Kenna Blake. True, she seems to be the only succubus with a conscience and a specific strategy for finding her male meals, but she has a cute new apartment, a budding graphic design business, and the most unique friends she’s ever had.

Her personal love life, however, is non-existent.

Until the legendary vampire Randal Vincent sweeps into her life. Even though he isn’t someone she set out to date, at least she can kiss him without killing him. But when you’re dating someone who’s the inspiration for Dracula, there are bound to be a few hiccups along the way…

~ Review ~

New Adult paranormal is a genre I'm pretty much always interested in. I read a lot of NA, but I don't feel like a huge percentage of that is paranormal, which is kind of weird since paranormal is like my spirit animal genre. So yeah, when I come across a New Adult paranormal story that looks good, I jump on board. Like I did with Seduce. I was especially drawn in by this one because it seemed so different from regular paranormals I read---the MC is a succubus! That's freaking cool. And throw in that legendary vampire, and heck to the yes I was so in for this story. Now that I've read Seduce, I can say that it was wonderfully unique, and I really liked it.

As I said, the MC, Kenna, is a succubus. Not only is she a succubus, but she's one who doesn't embrace it with everything she's got. She actually considers it a curse. And she holds herself to some high moral standards. In a way, that probably could have been annoying, but I actually respected her for this. She's a good person. She doesn't want the fact that she's a succubus to turn her into something she's not. Yes, the disdain she seems to feel toward her self could possibly become an issue later in the series, but in Seduce, her strong character was her biggest win for me. Other than that, I didn't really love her, but I didn't hate her either. So I guess I liked her. She was cool to read about.

That legendary vampire I was so excited about... well, in Seduce he wasn't anything super special. Seemed pretty run of the mill old-time vamp. However, he was not unlikable. I actually thought he was interesting. And he's getting even MORE interesting---to the point that I feel super confident his character will rise to shine more in the next book(s) in the series. He was very gentlemanly, which I totally enjoyed. I'd have to say my biggest issue with him isn't even really HIM at all; it's his ex, who needs to seriously go away. But I can't really hold that against him, therefore I won't. All in all, I liked Randal.

A couple other characters were Kenna's friends Sage and Dex. I wasn't so much a fan of Sage. She got on my nerves a bit, and her jealous streak did not warm me to her. Especially since she fell into it without talking to Kenna at all---she just instantly got mad at Kenna for something Kenna had no clue would be an issue. Still, Sage wasn't the worst ever or anything, and I do have hope she'll get better. As for Dex, I LOVED HIM. My favorite character in this book without a doubt. He's funny and nice and I'd totally be friends with him. I'm so glad he and Kenna became friends, and I'm loving seeing their friendship grow. Seriously, Dex freaking rocks.

On the writing front, I really enjoyed Jennifer Snyder's writing. I liked the humor, and I thought the world-building was both interesting and effective. This story has a different take on paranormal creatures that helped make this story unique. As for pacing, I must admit that the story could be quite slow. My personal READING of it was the exact opposite, but even as I flew through the book, I noticed how it kind of dragged a bit. There were a good amount of high points that made up for this, and the last chunk really picked things up. However, I also felt like a lot of the story was somewhat aimless. What was the point to it all? That became more clear later on, especially around the end, but I think the pacing issue can be considerably attributed to this.

All that said, I found Seduce to be incredibly entertaining. I loved learning about the world and meeting Dex. I liked getting to know Kenna as she narrated her story and seeing Randal as she got to know him. And I especially liked where the story was headed when I reached the end---meaning, I totally plan on picking up book 2.

If you're looking for a unique New Adult paranormal story that is definitely headed in an awesome direction, Seduce is a novel you should check out.

3 stars - A refreshingly unique NA paranormal, and a cool start to a series!
