Pyxis By K.C. Neal ~ Review

From Goodreads:

Corinne lives an average teenage life working at her dad’s cafe, hanging out with her best friend, and trying to forget a falling-out with her almost-boyfriend Mason. Things take a strange turn when she uses her late grandmother’s food dyes for a bake sale, and her customers suddenly find her irresistibly alluring. Then she discovers she and Mason are haunted by the same dreams of a dark force that consumes everything in its path.

Pursued by shadowy figures and a crazy woman with secrets from the past, Corinne must find out who her grandmother really was. In her quest to unravel her family’s history, she learns she is destined to protect this world--and the dark world of her dreams. She races to find the answers she seeks before her nightmares break free.

My Thoughts:

3 stars - Fast and quirky this one creates a whole new genre

Pyxis is unique.  The supernatural is there but it's not like what I've read in other books.  As a result, this book is difficult to predict and that makes it a fun read.  It's certainly YA but the angst is not the focus of the story.  That make it different than most YA books and in many ways refreshing.  It just has to be experienced and enjoyed because you can't compare it to the rest.  It's a fast read that's ending had me wanting to pick up the next book as soon as possible.  I will admit that it felt like I'd only seen the first act in a 3 act play.  Very little felt resolved.

Corinne is understandably confused by her situation and she tries to puzzle out the Pyxis without the help of a mentor.  That's not working so well.  I did want to shout at her a couple of times when I saw the clues before she did, but I still liked her.  I love Mason although I'm still wondering some thing about him.  He seems to know a little more than he may be letting on.  I'm hoping for more about that in the next book.  I do love his devotion to helping Corinne despite her reluctance to make him officially her boyfriend.  Authors use lots of the things to get in the way of a couple getting together but the reasons in this one seem vague.  I'm hoping to see more with that in book two as well.

If you're looking from something fast and quirky that doesn't feel like anything else, then this is a great YA book to pick up.

Tempting the Player by J. Lynn ~ Review

Add to Goodreads
Source:  Received from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review

(Please note that J. Lynn is JLAs adult books and this one is VERY adult)

Tempting the Player (Gamble Brother #2)

From Goodreads:

Chad Gamble, all-star pitcher for the Nationals, is one of the best players on—and off—the field. And right now, the notorious bad boy wants Bridget Rodgers. But with her lush curves and snappy comebacks, the feisty redhead is the kind of woman a man wants to settle down with…and that’s the last thing Chad needs.

When the paparazzi catch them in a compromising position, Chad’s manager issues an ultimatum: clean up his act or kiss his multi-million dollar contract goodbye. To save his career, his meddling publicist says he'll have to convince everyone Bridget isn’t just his flavor of the week, but his girlfriend.

Being blackmailed into a fake relationship with Chad Gamble isn’t easy, especially when the sizzling physical attraction between them is undeniable. With a month to go on their arranged pretense, it's going to take every ounce of willpower they have not to fall into bed together...or in love.

My Thoughts:

5 stars - Scorching HOT from the get go & just got better from there!

What do I say about this book? I can tell you that I LOVED the first book in this series, Tempting the Best Man.   I don't read as much adult books and this series is truly ADULT but I loved it.  As much as I loved TtBM, TtP was so much better.  Why?

I'm thinking it's Chad.  He's VERY rough around the edges and his image is even worse than reality.  NO way is this man falling for just ONE girl.  But then he sees Bridget.  Everyone agrees that Bridget is NOT Chad's normal women, including his babysitter - heehee.  Not telling what that's about but it's too funny. Back to this Bridget being different than his normal fare - yeah THAT's what makes her different and the boy has no chance - though he puts up a good fight. Or rather she does. Have I said too much? Hmmm....yes maybe I have.

Bottom line, this book is one scorching hot ride - pun intended - with a delicious story compelling you forward!  Easily, this book is a one sitting kinda book.  I took two but not because I didn't want to do it in one!!!

If you loved Tempting the Best Man, then this one is a RUN RIGHT NOW AND GET IT kinda book.  If you haven't read TtBM, you can still read this one - it's a companion kinda series BUT you will so want to read TtBM later - just sayin'

So if hot, sexy, steam romance is your thing, then RUN, do not walk, to pick this one up.

Mason laughed.  I'd always loved the sound of his laugh, a bubbly rumble that started deep in his throat and seemed to spill out and expand into space.  He sat down against one wall and stretched out his long legs, ankles crossed.  His hands folded across his stomach, and he regarded me for a moment.  I tried not to fidget.

"So what's the news at school?"  he said finally.  "Sophie still a nightmare?  How's Angeline?  Who's with who?" (Page 82)

What ya think?  Review for this coming tomorrow.  Have a teaser for me this week?  Leave me a comment.

Losing It by Cora Carmack ~ Tour Stop & GIVEAWAY

Tour Schedule

From Goodreads:

Virginity.

Bliss Edwards is about to graduate from college and still has hers. Sick of being the only virgin among her friends, she decides the best way to deal with the problem is to lose it as quickly and simply as possible-- a one-night stand. But her plan turns out to be anything but simple when she freaks out and leaves a gorgeous guy alone and naked in her bed with an excuse that no one with half-a-brain would ever believe. And as if if that weren't embarrassing enough, when she arrives for her first class of her last college semester, she recognizes her new theater professor. She'd left him naked in her bed about 8 hours earlier.

My Thoughts:

4 stars - Funny and charming, the pages just flew by!

Garrick.  Yes, I'm starting with the boy again.  He's sexy and charming.  Bliss is attracted immediately and, really how could she resist? She's a theater student and she sees this hot boy reading Shakespeare.  Yeah, the chemistry was fast and scorching HOT.  But chemistry a relationship does not make.  That's were Garrick shows off his incredible charm and his confident personality.  So this girl left him naked and...um...unfulfilled only hours after meeting her, he doesn't hold it against her when they meet in class the NEXT day!  He's cute about it really but you could feel the sexual tension between them.  So he's her teacher, um doesn't mean they aren't both of age and VERY attracted to each other.

What I loved about this book was that even though they did have this incredible chemistry, they developed a relationship - while they were trying to resist each other.  Garrick worrying about her is so cute.  Bliss jealous over some unknown phone call is adorable.  Oh and the epilogue from Garricks POV is totally fun.

Bliss has avoided...um going all the way and really can't figure out why.  She tried the one-night stand thing just to get it out of the way but...yeah.  That ended with her soon to be professor in her bed naked and her NOT.  She's not sure why she just can't turn off her brain and let it happen.  But she does figure it out.  I loved her reason but I won't tell you.  Gonna have to read it for that.

Oh and Hamlet, the gray cat?  She is fabulous!! No other comment is allowed, sorry.

Bliss sick and seeing dream Garrick?  Awesome!

The theater setting was interesting.  Not really my thing but it certainly drove the story.  I thought the story took off quickly and had the BEST ending.  There were a few slow parts but really I enjoyed it very much.

If you like New Adult romance, then this is a great choice!!

Add to Goodreads

To kick things off here, I have some teasers from Deity for you and a couple of giveaways!

One for Seth

Seth chuckled, and then his mouth was making its way to mine, and I opened for him.  the edges of his hair tickled my cheeks as the kiss deepened.  His fingers drifted down the front of my blouse and then they were sliding over the bare skin of my stomach.  I wrapped my leg around his, and were moving together on the bed.  His lips were dancing all over my flushed skin as his hands slid down, fingers finding the button on my jeans.

A second later, there was a knock on my door and a booming voice.

"Alexandria?"

Seth stilled above me, panting.  "You have got to be freaking kidding me."

Leon knocked again.  "Alexandria, I know you're in there." (Page 28 of ACR)

One for Aiden

Aiden glanced down at me, smiling tightly.  "Do you how ancient warriors trained?  They used to fight Deimos and Phobos, who used the warriors' worst fears against them during battle."

"Thanks for the daily wird god history lesson, but--"

"But since the gods of Fear and Terror have been off the circuit for awhile, they created this chamber.  They believe that fighting using only your other senses to guide you is the best way to hone your skills and face your fears."

"Fears of what?"

He opened the door and a black hole greeted us.  "Whatever fears are holding you back."

I dug in my heels.  "I'm not afraid."

"You're terrified."

"Aiden, I am two seconds from--" My own surprised shriek cut me off as he hauled me into the chamber, shutting the door behind him, casting the room in utter darkness.  My breath froze in my throat.

"Aiden...I can't see anything."

"That's the point."

"Well, thanks, Captain Obvious." I reached out blindly, but only felt air.  "What do you expect me to do in here?"  As soon as the question left my mouth, I was assaulted with totally inappropriate images of all the things we could do in here.

"We fight." (Page 61 of ARC)

Available TODAY ~ Confessions of an Alli Cat by Courtney Cole

Thirty-five year-old Allison “Alli” Lancaster has it all—a fabulous job, a beautiful 15 year-old daughter, a hilarious BFF and a gorgeous house with a pool and Jacuzzi in an exclusive Las Vegas neighborhood.  What she doesn’t have is a husband, because she kicked her lousy, cheating ex to the curb nine months ago.  Since then, Alli has paid her dues with seemingly endless self-improvement and seemingly endless mourning.  Now she’s ready to move on and try new things.

Alli’s idea of “trying new things” is nothing like that devil-of-a-best-friend of hers.  Somehow, Sara, the devil of a best friend, talks Alli into trying out a sex toy, sleeping with a younger man and letting a stranger in a lab jacket put hot wax on a place that should never, ever, ever see wax.  And that’s only the beginning.

Alli never saw her life going quite like this.   She also never thought she’d meet someone else who had the very real potential to change her life forever.

But she did.

Enter the new guy.  He’s gorgeous, refined and mature.  He’s also marriage material.  But that poses a problem for Alli, who renounced the institution of marriage when she renounced her ex.  What’s a girl to do?

They say that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.  But what the heck happens when you can’t leave Vegas?  Well, you spin the wheel, of course.  You play the game and let the chips fall where they may.

Alli just hopes she can find them all.

~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt
“You look marvelous!” Sara says when I round the corner into the bedroom.
“I feel ridiculous.”
“Why?  We are simply two wealthy women with trophy boy toys out for a night on the town at one of Vegas’s most luxurious night spots.  Nothing to feel ridiculous about.”
“I’m dressed like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, only without the body for it,” I say, indicating my short, tight dress.  “How did I let you talk me into buying this?”
“Well, I thought it might help things with Rick the Dick many moons ago, but this is an even better use.  Besides, you look mouthwatering.”
Standing up, she walks to me.  She trails the fingertips of one hand down my cheek.
“A beautiful face,” she says, dragging her hands down to palm my boobs next.  She gives them a squeeze.  “Delicious rack,” she declares then grabs my waist and spins me around.  “And a perfect ass,” she exclaims, slapping my butt.  “You are gorgeous and any man in his right mind would give his left nut to lick you from head to toe and everywhere in between.”
“I think you secretly have the hots for me,” I laugh.  “Maybe I should be going out with you instead.”
“Oh, you flatter!  If either of us swung that way, we’d be perfect together.  But, alas, I’m a sausage lover, as are you.  No tacos for us.”
I can’t help but laugh.  “Have you always been this way and I’m just now noticing?”
“Yes.  You’ve been preoccupied for a few years.”
“I’m beginning to really love this new you.  Even if she shocks me regularly and gets me into trouble more often than not.”
“You love it and you know it.  I add much-needed excitement to your life,” Sara claims, walking to the mirror to touch up her lipstick.
“Did I tell you I love that hair style on you, too?”  I ask, referring to her dark red pixie cut.  She totally has the face to pull it off.
“Keep going like that and I’m yours.”
We both laugh.
“Well, I guess I’m ready.”  I add under my breath, “At least as ready as I’ll ever be.”
“Then it’s time to go.”
My stomach flutters in dread and anxiety and, yes, a little bit of excitement.  I take a deep breath and smile at Sara.  She loops her arms through mine and grins.
“Welcome to the first night of the rest of your life.”
We make our way outside and down the walk to the curb, to the shiny black limousine waiting there.  The ride is only twenty minutes or so, during which I drink champagne in the back of the limo at a rate of speed that would make a sailor proud.
When we glide to a stop at the club, I follow Sara out of the car.
And the man waiting for me nearly takes my breath away.
He’s taller than I imagined and much broader than I expected.  His shoulders look a mile wide in his perfectly-tailored tuxedo, making his waist look smaller than mine.  His hair is dark brown and his eyes are the same dark, sparkling blue as they are in his picture.
He’s young, all right.  But there is nothing boyish about this guy.  Not at all.
As I step from the car, he extends his hand toward me.  I slip my fingers into his and he smiles.  I’m pretty sure my knees go numb and my uterus has a spasm.  But it’s when he speaks that I know it’s all over but the shouting. And the Hallelujah choir.
“You’re more beautiful than I could’ve imagined,” he purrs in a deep, velvety voice.
Yep, I’m gonna ride him like a runaway bull tonight. No two ways about it.
The thought makes me smile.
From Goodreads:
Tim Macbeth is a 17-year-old albino and a recent transfer to the prestigious Irving School, where the motto is, “Enter here to be and find a friend.” Tim does not expect to find a friend; all he really wants to do is escape his senior year unnoticed. Despite his efforts to blend into the background, he finds himself falling for the quintessential “it” girl, Vanessa Sheller, girlfriend of Irving’s most popular boy. To Tim’s surprise, Vanessa is into him, too, and she can kiss her social status goodbye if anyone finds out. Tim and Vanessa enter into a clandestine relationship, but looming over them is the Tragedy Paper, Irving’s version of a senior year thesis, assigned by the school’s least forgiving teacher.
The story unfolds from two alternating viewpoints: Tim, the tragic, love-struck figure, and Duncan, a current senior, who uncovers the truth behind Tim and Vanessa’s story and will consequently produce the greatest Tragedy Paper in Irving’s history.
Fragile by M. Leighton ~ Tour Stop + GIVEAWAY
Source: Received eBook copy from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
From Goodreads:
Her heart, as delicate as glass. His love, as strong as steel. Can either survive life and death?
Hardy Bradford is an eighteen year old football phenomenon who has the girl, the school, the town and the future in the palm of his hand. His life is all mapped out for him, right down to who he’ll marry and how he’ll become a professional football player. It doesn't seem to matter that Hardy would’ve chosen a much different life if it was up to him. But it's not. At least not until his Miracle comes along.
The first time Hardy laid eyes on Miracle St. James, he didn’t know who she was, but he knew she was something different and that he’d never get her out of his head. And he didn’t. Now, months later, Hardy’s world is turned upside down when Miracle shows up in his class, stealing his heart and forever changing the course of his life.
Add to Goodreads
Miracle’s sick. Very sick. And Hardy might be losing the only thing in his life that has ever mattered. How much is too much to sacrifice for the one you love? For just a little more time? For just one more chance? Can Hardy be the hero Miracle needs? Or is it Hardy that needs saving?
My Thoughts:
5 stars - Sweetest love story EVER!
So I just need to be brutally honest here at the beginning of this review.  When I first looked at this book, I thought...um...not really sure this is for me.  I mean I read THE FAULT IN OUR STARS recently and cried my eyes out.  SO didn't want to go there again (NOT that I didn't LOVE TFIOS but really can you read a book like that more than say once a year?  I'm thinking NO).  But FRAGILE is authored by Michelle Leighton and I LOVE her books.  The second thought won out.  I decided to read the book but....I was leery.
With that in mind, what did I find in FRAGILE.  I can tell you that it isn't a sad story AT ALL.  Instead, it's about the sweetest love story I HAVE EVER READ.  The characters are adorable.  LOVE Hardy so much.  He appears to be in the perfect place but it's not where he wants to be, not really.  It's where his father wants him to be.  I don't think it ever occurred to Hardy to look for anything other than what his father had planned for him until he discovered the more that he was missing.  Miracle has a different way at looking at life.  Her health problems have caused her to look past the petty issues of high school and hold her head up high in very difficult situations.  Her vision causes Hardy to see things differently.
Let me say something about the love triangle/square that may be considered to be part of this story.  It's not there.  Yes, Hardy has a girlfriend at the beginning of the book and yes Miracle has...shall we say an interested party BUT I never saw the angst or stress that that plot development often brings.  This really makes this story unique and comfortable to read.  The things that keep Hardy and Miracle apart are more growth inspiring than another guy/girl.  There is genuine growth in these characters not sexual tension.  Now don't get me wrong, there is A LOT of chemistry between these two and the romance is HOT and heavy, more so than I really was expecting from this kind of book.  It looks so innocent sitting there but this book doesn't hold back on the romance or the steam!
I read this book FAST.  The pages slid by and I was so happy with the ending.  Talk about a SWEET ending.  Lots of aww's going on and a couple of fist pumping YES'!
If you enjoy the contemporary love scene in YA with more than the average chemistry and steam, then pick this one up for sure!!!
