Book description:

Crazy how eight years can disappear in an instant. One look at Katie Watts, and I'm a fifteen-year-old again--the one who risked everything to save a terrified girl from her twisted kidnapper. She's grown-up now--beautiful, quiet, composed--and telling her story to the world. A story that involves me in more ways than you can imagine. She used to call me her guardian angel. Sure, I risked my life, but she was worth dying for.

I need to make contact with her. Just to ensure that she's safe.

Somehow we reconnect. We become friends . . . but I want more. I want to make her mine. And she wants me too. Does she know who I am? Has she figured me out? Not yet. But she will. In the meantime, I need to make sure that whatever hold that animal had on her is gone.

So, yeah, I'm stealing these moments with her. Savoring them. Knowing, dreading, that she'll soon find out who I really am. And everything will fall apart. All because of that twisted, perverted monster sitting on death row. Her kidnapper. A convicted serial killer.

My father.

Review...

I've enjoyed this author in the past so I was excited to read this one.  It sounded different.  I'll admit to being a little nervous about this subject matter.  But this author handled it well.

Powerful and poignant, this reads quickly as the pieces fall together.  Written in alternating past and present chapters it switches between the two main characters.  Not always chronological, the big parts of the past are clear but the details fall together slowly as the book unfolds.  I think this is a big reason why this book reads quickly.  While the subject matter is difficult, I just wanted to know so the pages flew.

The characters feel real.  My heart aches for both of them.  Katie doesn't feel lucky to have survived; she just feels broken.  The boy was abused by the same man that abused Katie.  His father.  He battles those who don't believe him about what happened.  He may look like he's come further than Katie but I'm not sure that's true.  He has a lot of pain to deal with.  Both of them have so much to heal from.

I will not comment on the story too much.  I refuse to spoil this.  The ending was hard on me.  I wanted things settled but it's not.  Never Let You Go finishes the story and I have to wait till May to find out the end.  The other thing I will say about the story is lying is a theme.  I struggle with that theme.  This story makes more sense with this theme than most but it did have me screaming at the book a few times.

Don't let the subject matter scare you off from this one.  It's powerful.
