Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout Review & Giveaway reminder

Happy Book Birthday to Obsidian & Jennifer!
Source: I received an eBook copy from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

My Summary:

Katy and her mother are still struggling with the death of her dad three years ago from cancer.  When her mother finally decides to move on, it's to West Virginia and right before Katy's senior year.  Great.  Then Katy meets her next door neighbors, a set of twins.  Dee is a fast friend but her brother Daemon is a jerk albeit a gorgeous jerk.  Katy struggles between wanting to stare at him and wanting to slap him.  She does give him the finger a fair number of times.  He hates her and she doesn't know what she ever did to him or their weird group of friends that all feel the same way.   Only Dee seems to think she okay to be around.  As strangle thing keep happening that just don't add up with Daemon's version of events, Katy is suspicious.  But nothing prepares her for when she suddenly and unintentionally discovers their secrets.  Her knowing puts them all in danger.  Can she keep their secrets?  Can she fight her attraction for the arrogant and incredible Daemon?  Can she live through Homecoming?

My thoughts:

5 stars - a must read

Sometimes when I read, I have to take breaks.  I get stressed by the action or frustrated by the plot.  This is NOT one of those books.  I read this book straight through with no breaks.  I also made the HUGE mistake of starting this book late Friday night.  Needless to say, I didn't do much sleeping.  I couldn't put this book down.  I wanted to understand Daemon.  I wanted to understand their secret.  I wanted to know what this danger that was so obviously there was.  I wanted to know how Katy would react to Daemon's provocation.   I laughed.  I was amused.  I was ticked.  I was scared.  I worried.  I LOVED this book.

The world building was perfect.  It's easy to believe this aliens living among us set-up.  The little talents of the resident aliens start showing up quickly giving hints to who they are and what they can do.  The danger is also clear though it takes a while to understand the cause.  When the explications are given, it all seems very plausible.  I think I really prefer the strange among the familiar that this book delivers.

The characters are fabulous.  I love Katy.  She is somewhat reserved at first, but Daemon has a way of pushing her buttons and she blossoms into this outspoken, strong girl that is willing to fight hard against impossible odds.  I love her.  Now Daemon is a very complex guy.  I can't wait to read the chapter Jenifer has promised from his POV.  I would love to know what is going on in his head.  He is ridiculously a jerk.  I think he does it on purpose to push Katy away from him and his sister.  He's fiercely protective and incredibly badass.  But it's also pretty clear that he is fighting his attraction to Katy or kitten as he likes to call her just to tick her off.  Since Katy is also fighting her attraction to Daemon, you can just imagine the hot explosion of emotions that erupts from the two of them.  They are like flash combustion together.  Daemon's protective streak quickly includes Katy and the trouble just keeps coming from there.  I am anxious to read book two and see where this relationship goes.

The plot is action packed.  Like I said, I read this straight through never even wanting to stop.  The time flew and I was surprised to look up and see I had read all night.  Jenifer is fast becoming a favorite author.  I would read anything she wrote.

If you read YA then you should read this book.  If you just love to read good books, you should read this book.  Whatever you read, you should pick this one up.  It's fabulous.

  11. I'm a bit wary of reading a book with a jerk for a male love interest, but I'll see how it all plays out once I get a copy.

  12. Great review! You make an interesting point mentioning that because these two are fighting to stay away from each other when the finally get together, it's really explosive. I think this is most definitely something I need to read. Thanks for the review!
