The Score (Off-Campus #3) by Elle Kennedy
He knows how to score, on and off the ice
Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she's going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.
It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over
Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.
I was super looking forward to making it to this book in the Off-Campus series. I'd heard Dean was a favorite and a good friend of mine has The Score ranked as her second favorite of the series after The Deal. I went into this one thinking it'd go the same for me. And while I did love the book, it definitely was not a total favorite.
First and foremost, I loved Allie. She was just the kind of character I instantly knew I'd enjoy reading about and I was not wrong. She was funny and driven and just plain awesome. As for Dean, he actually grew on me faster than I'd anticipated. I didn't dislike him before the book started--on the contrary, I thought he was cool and funny. But I'd been skeptical of his hero factor for a romance. He ended up winning me over pretty quickly, however.
As for the writing, the humor and romance were so well done. I literally laughed out loud multiple times. And Dean and Allie made a terrific couple. I loved them together and was rooting for them from the beginning.
There were only a couple of personal preference issues that brought the book down a little for me. One was the pacing--I wanted Allie and Dean to officially get together sooner, if only a little bit. I got impatient waiting for them. And the other was the way a certain thing toward the end was handled. I'm not going to go into details, but I was disappointed in how low it got. Again, this is a personal preference issue--both of these things are.
Overall, I did love The Score. I loved the couple and had a great time reading their story, and of course I also look forward to finishing out the series with The Goal. Especially after the way The Score ended... If you haven't given the Off-Campus series a shot yet, you're missing out!
4 stars - With well done humor & romance, I loved this one!
