Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Source: Purchased audio book

My Summary:

Evie is sixteen and all she wants is to be normal. She wants to attend a normal high school, have normal girl friends, have normal dates, have a normal locker and have a normal life. No such luck. Instead she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA), is tutored at “the center”, dated (heavy on the past tense) a faerie, and carries a tazor. Oh and she can see through glamour’s that paranormal creatures use to hide what they really are. That little talent got her out of foster care and into the service of the IPCA and the reason for the tazor. But that organization is keeping secrets from her and the shape shifter that just broke is cute. Not to mention that paranormals are being killed everywhere. Evie’s life may not be normal but it’s all about to change.

My thoughts:

4 stars - a great read

Cue the paranormal regulars, you know the ones vampires, faeries, and werewolves then throw in a hag, a shapeshifter and an unknown.  Now add a whole different twist on that normal paranormal world.  Humans live in blissful ignorance for the most part because there are international organizations that have the situation under control.  Oh course that "under control" is subject to debate.  The setting is now set for a very interesting series that I was quickly drawn into.  The world building is fabulous.  Normal lure for the regular crew is in place but there are added details that made this story unique and interesting.

The characters in this book are amazing.  Evie is so fun.  She wants to be normal but she isn't normal.  She has a very believable sixteen year old personality.  She makes me laugh and she stand strong in the face of a room full of vampires.  I loved her obsession with pink.  So much fun.  I also liked how she desperately wants to be good.  I love that aspect of choice that makes her so lovable.  I just love Lend.  The day he wore an ugly face just to see if Evie only liked him for his cute boy face was so precious.  I really enjoyed these two getting to know each other and then falling for each other.  The other boy in this story never stood a chance for which I was glad.  I think I may be tired of love triangles.

The plot was fast pasted and interesting.  It kept me guessing, which I really like.  I spend a lot of time trying to figure out what Evie is and I'm still not sure.  There's still lots of this story left.

It's a great paranormal romance read.  If that's your thing, for sure pick this one up.  I'm currently glad that I have book two on my shelf to start right away.  Can't wait to see what's next for Evie and Len.
