Shadow Rider by Christine Feehan ~ Review

The #1 New York Times bestselling “queen of paranormal romance”* is back with a sexy new series starring a Chicago crime family that hides a dark, mystical secret...
Whether it’s fast cars or fast women, Stefano Ferraro gets what he wants. When he’s not fodder for the paparazzi, he commands Ferraro family businesses—both legitimate and illegitimate.

While their criminal activity is simply a rumor yet to be proven, no one knows the real truth. The Ferraros are a family of shadow riders capable of manipulating light and dark, an ability Stefano thought ran in his family alone—until now…

With little left to her name, Francesca Cappello has come to Chicago in hopes of a new life. She wasn’t expecting to attract the attention of a man with primal hunger in his eyes, driven to claim her as his to protect and to please. And if he discovers her secret, it could ruin her...

I always enjoy Christine Feehan books and so I cracked open this book and discovered this shadow world - I was hooked.

Stefano Ferraro is used to getting exactly what he wants.  He practically raised his brothers and sister when his mom found little interest in them until it was time to train them.  He is the rock and leader of this family.  And family is everything to him.  He will do anything to protect them.  And when he meets Francesca, she becomes part of his family from the moment their shadows meet.   Stefano is a rider and his responsibilities are great.

This alpha male had me quickly.  His family has a reputation but I saw him at his core.  He is a good man and he fights for victims.  I fell fast and hard.  AND I cheered for him.  For his family.  For his women.  And I was thoroughly stuck in their story.  Read it straight through, grumbling at any interruption.

The whole world intrigues me.   It's different than most paranormal worlds I read about.  Shadows and psychic abilities.  I loved the gifts they have.  I'd love to be able to tell if someone was lying to me and it certainly comes up in the story line to help the characters a lot.  I enjoyed the idea of moving through shadows and the strength it gives them.  It's balanced by the cost to them both on a physical basis and should their shadow be damaged.  It is a complete and well developed world that can hold a multitude of stories.  I look forward to many more.

This story is full to the brim with protective alpha men who will do what it takes to protect their family and their women.  There is also powerful women who stand up to them and demand to be heard.  The banter is so enjoyable.

There's also an element of suspense involved.  There is danger for Francesca and be certain that Stefano is having no part of that.  Fair warning to anyone who risks a Ferraro women...they don't take that well.  Watch out.  It certainly added to the story and gave the guys lots of opportunities to be protective and adorable.

I love the characters.  The story is great.  The writing good too.  All around, it's a great reading experience.
