The Ones Who Got Away by Roni Loren ~ Review

Source:  Received an ARC eBook in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Liv's words cut off as Finn got closer. The man approaching was nothing like the boy she'd known. The bulky football muscles had streamlined into a harder, leaner package and the look in his deep green eyes held no trace of boyish innocence.

It's been twelve years since tragedy struck the senior class of Long Acre High School. Only a few students survived that fateful night—a group the media dubbed The Ones Who Got Away.

Liv Arias thought she'd never return to Long Acre—until a documentary brings her and the other survivors back home. Suddenly her old flame, Finn Dorsey, is closer than ever, and their attraction is still white-hot. When a searing kiss reignites their passion, Liv realizes this rough-around-the-edges cop might be exactly what she needs...

This is the kind of story that grabs you from the first chapter and holds on to you. The details pour out around the here and now.  And what a here and now it is.

Liv survived and she's back for an interview for a documentary.  A school shooting.  A nightmare.  She survived but her dreams have died.  She exists.  And as she comes together with all the others that got away, she discovers she's not the only one.  And Finn may be the worst for wear.  His demons go deep.  Needless to say, these characters were real and I loved them all.  I wanted so much for only good things for them.

I think a story of how the survivors fair after a major shooting is, unfortunately,  such a relevant and poignant topic.  This one definitely had my emotions all tied up.  There just wasn't a clear path to recovery for any of them.  I was just hanging on and hoping for them.  And at one point, I was so very proud of Liv.  I cheered and was so happy.

The writing is great.  I wanted to devour it from start to finish and it was only my life getting in the way that stopped that.  It's a great way to start this new year.  There is hope.  Dreams can still happen.

If you enjoy a survivor story with lots of sexual tension, then you should definitely give this one a go.  Go on, add it to your TBR list.  You won't regret it.
