Mercy by Rebecca Lim

Summary from Goodreads:

An electric combination of angels, mystery and romance, MERCY is the first book in a major new paranormal series.

There's something very wrong with me. I can't remember who I am or how old I am, or even how I got here. All I know is that when I wake up, I could be any one. It is always this way. There's nothing I can keep with me that will stay. It's made me adaptable. I must always re-establish ties. I must tread carefully or give myself away. I must survive.

Mercy doesn't realize it yet, but as she journeys into the darkest places of the human soul, she discovers that she is one of the celestial host exiled with fallen angel, Lucifer. Now she must atone for taking his side. To find her own way back to heaven, Mercy must help a series of humans in crisis and keep the unwary from getting caught up in the games that angels play. Ultimately she must choose between her immortal companion, Lucifer, and a human boy who risks everything for her love.

My thoughts:

3 Stars A Good Read

So if you read my reviews, you know that I normally do my own summary. Writing that is my way of organizing my feelings for the book. I choose to use Goodreads summary this time because in that summary is the world building for this book. Mercy doesn’t know what’s going on with her. She only knows that she wakes up to be a new person and she dreams about someone she cares about named Luc. So for the whole story, we really don’t know that Mercy, Carmen this time, is really a fallen angel who is going through some kind of penance. It makes it tough to keep up. Even by the end of the story, we know very little about what’s really happening. Truly, the Goodreads summary told me more.

I love the characters in this book. Mercy is a very strong person who doesn’t let Carmen sit back and hide like she normally would. I love that she shows how things can change quickly in the cliques at school simply by changing your attitude. I love Ryan. He is a broken soul. His twin sister has been missing for two years and he can feel that she is still alive. Carmen is the first one to believe him. He clings to her help. They build a fast friendship. I love how he starts to figure out that she isn’t Carmen and I love how he teases her.

I struggled with the plot because I figured it out too easily. I knew who the bad guy was early and I knew what the last scene would be. There are lots of unique aspects to this plot; there may have just been too many clues for the careful reader. I do want to read the sequel. I have developed a relationship with Mercy and I want to know what happens to her. My heart is broken for Ryan and I hope to learn more about him too.

All Around Me Lyrics

My hands are searching for you
My arms are outstretched towards you
I feel you on my fingertips
My tongue dances behind my lips for you

This fire rising through my being
Burning I'm not used to seeing you

I'm alive, I'm alive

I can feel you all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healing

My hands float up above me
And you whisper you love me
And I begin to to fade
Into our secret place

The music makes me sway
The angels singing say
We are alone with you
I am alone and they are too with you

I'm alive, I'm alive

I can feel you all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healing

As I cry
The light is white
And I see you

I'm alive, I'm alive, I'm alive

I can feel you all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healing

Take my hand I give it you
Now you own me, all I am
You said you would never leave me
I believe you, I believe

I can feel you all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healed

  1. See, I didn't realize who the bad guy was, until towards the end of the book. So, that sort of kept me somewhat engaged. I thought the book was pretty well written and I also liked how Mercy didn't let Carmen appear weak and she allowed her to sort of assert herself. I also really enjoyed Ryan and the friendship that budded between him and Mercy/Carmen throughout the story. Even more, I love that his sister, who had been taken and held captive for two years still remained strong as well. This is a pretty good book all in all that sets the stage for a really good series to follow.

Thanks so much for sharing your review! :)
