Sworn to the Shadow God (Aspect and Anchor #2) by Ruby Dixon

Adventure.

It's what my boring life is missing, so when I fall through a portal into another world, I'm excited. Here, I'm important. Here, I'm special.

I find out just *how* special when I meet Death.

Yup. That guy. He's been exiled to the mortal realm to work through his flaws, and he's just as spoiled and awful as you'd think. Rhagos, the Shadow Lord, is arrogant and rude and controlling and demands to get his way. He's selfish. He's impossible.

He's also utterly gorgeous. Magnetic. Lonely. And strangely protective of me.

Thanks to a magic bond, I now serve him as his anchor to the mortal realm. It means that I'm his conscience, his guide...and the target for any assassin or glory-seeker. After a few days of this, I'd rather go home than continue on this 'adventure'. I need a way back to Earth, and fast.

As the world falls down around us and we're hunted simply for existing, I find myself wondering what it'd be like to serve the lonely god of death...in all ways. To kiss him. To touch him. To bed him.

Except...I'm supposed to be finding a way home, not trying to kiss Rhagos. No matter how tempting he is. No matter how much he stares at my lips.

No matter how much I want it.

After Bound to the Battle God was my favorite book of 2019, of course Sworn to the Shadow God was one of my most anticipated books of 2020. I downloaded it on KU the day it released and was SO EXCITED to get reading. Then life started happening. Work was busy. I was sick. I was tired. Things were stressful. So I didn't really get a chance to sink my teeth into it until this past week. But now that it has, and since I finished it like five minutes ago, I can say that this book was so freaking good omfg.

The shining star of this book was the main characters and their development. Max! Max and her kindness. Her soft heart. And above all, her loyalty. She was a little too trusting at times, but how that paired with her loyalty as the story progressed fit perfectly. She grew from trusting everyone to trusting the one she was loyal to implicitly. And Rhagos! Total Lord of the Underworld vibes. With an extra soft spot for Max. It was everything I wanted from him, honestly. Love.

I highly enjoyed that this story wasn't just a replay of what happened in book 1 with new characters. Even though book 1 was an all-time fav, I was interested in seeing something different from this world and Ruby Dixon definitely delivered. Rhagos and Max's story is a great addition to the world of Aspects & Anchors. It took some twists that I was NOT expecting, even when I thought I had their situation figured out.

I have a couple teeny tiny things that may be worth mentioning. The first was how long it took Max to find out which aspect Rhagos was. BUT Ruby Dixon talked about it in the author's note so it doesn't bother me anymore and when I re-read (because I def will) it won't be a problem. The other thing is the way some portions dragged. It's wild because I love long books! I want the Aspect and Anchor books to be so long! And I'm glad this one was! But something about certain portions had me skimming. These portions were close to the beginning, however, so that probably has everything to do with it. Once the romance between Rhagos and Max amped up and then settled? I was in for every single page and word.

Overall, Sworn to the Shadow God was 100% worth all the anticipation and will more than likely be a fav of the year. A well constructed story supported by a romance that won me over easily and had my heart to the very end. Now it's over and I don't know what to do with myself--but I know I'm  beyond excited for the next installment in this world whenever it comes!

5 stars - Well constructed twists & a romance that stole my heart!
