The gun dropped from my face, revealing an emerald gaze just as intense. Her eyes, the color of the budding leaves behind her, sparkling in the morning light. A breeze caught her long, black curls, sending a strand across a pair of succulent lips pressed into a thin line of scrutiny. She wore her trademark black tank top, and—dear Lord and everything holy—based on the erect nipples, no bra. A pair of faded jeans revealed hints of tanned skin behind ripped holes. Strappy sandals covered her feet over cherry-red toenails as electric as the green in her eyes.

My thoughts were suddenly short-circuiting between the snarling guard dogs at her ankles, simply waiting on a command to attack, and the pair of headlights pulling my gaze like a beacon to her chest.

I didn’t like this. I prided myself on never being thrown off my game, and I was. Undoubtedly, one-hundred percent, thrown off my game.

I cleared my throat, squared my shoulders, and said the first thing that came to mind. “You got a permit for that cannon, Miss Harper?”

“You got a warrant to be on my land?”

“Don’t need a warrant just to chat.”

She shoved the nine millimeter into the band of her pants with an ease that verified her comfort level with it.

“Did you call?” She asked, although it wasn’t a question as much as a thinly veiled message that she didn’t like me showing up unannounced.

“Are you busy?”

“Yes.” The corner of her lip curved as she breezed past me, an extra sway of attitude in those hips.

Damn the woman.

Six beady, black eyes laced with warning glared at me as they passed by, falling into step behind the flowing black hair of their master. I waited a beat, watching the captain and her army descend down the pathway, each solider in their designated spots.
