Bound to the Battle God by Ruby Dixon

When I went to my neighbour’s apartment to investigate strange sounds, I never expected to fall through a portal into another world. Yet here I am, a stranger in an even stranger land... and I'm stranded. In this world, might makes right, men carry swords, and gods walk the earth. Within minutes of arriving, I’m enslaved!

Fun place...

How do I get home? GREAT question. Wish I had an answer!

The one person that might be able to help me is also the one person I want to throttle most. Aron, Lord of Storms, Butcher God of Battle, is my new companion. Or rather, I'm his. As Aron's anchor to the mortal realm, I'm the one that's supposed to be guiding him through his exile in the mortal world...

Ha. Joke's on him. I know nothing about this place!

But Aron and I have a common goal - get home. And we're bonded - anchor and god - with a bond unlike any other. So we travel together. We bicker. We bathe together. We fight our many, many enemies together. And sure, he’s a god, but he’s also an arrogant jerk. Brawny, smoking hot, irresistible jerk. I should want nothing to do with him. I certainly shouldn’t want to do things to him...

Mortals and gods don’t mix. We stick to the plan and ignore our attraction. Focused, with one goal in mind...

One task...
One goal...
Focused!

I-oh heck, I’m going to end up kissing him again, aren’t I?

I've been seeing books by Ruby Dixon around for a while but I've always been too chicken to pick them up. They look good but what if I don't enjoy them? What if I get excited to read them and they let me down? So I've never picked up any of her alien romances. But then recently I've seen people recommending a slow burn fantasy romance by Ruby Dixon and that had me interested. Then I saw a snippet someone posted in a Facebook group and I downloaded the book on KU. And now I'm sitting over here glad that I did because Bound to the Battle God ended up being one of the best books I've read this year.

One of the biggest things that worked for me with this book was the premise. It was honestly everything I could ask for. A grumpy hero. A couple whose lives are bound to one another's. A sassy heroine. Both of them thrown into a situation where it's basically them against the world. Gah! So good. And the writing absolutely did the story justice. It took me a hot second at the beginning to get into the book, but that's a common occurrence for me. And then once I was in, I was IN and obsessed. Plus, there were so many scenes in this book that were exactly what I wanted to happen. The best tropes. I was on cloud nine.

As I said, the hero is a grumpy one. But of course he develops a soft spot for the heroine. The heroine who has the best and funniest of attitudes. Their banter literally gave me life. As did their relationship growth. They go from not liking each other at all to kind of not minding each other to friends to more and it is the most satisfying arc. And the slow burn! I am happy sighing right now because it was so delightful.

Then there's the fact that this book is freaking huge. Like over 600 pages. I have a special place in my heart for long books. Honestly, they're my favorite. I read so much and so fast that I NEED books to be long in order to take up any substantial amount of time. So this one filled that need in a way that it didn't feel like it. At no point did the story drag. I could have gone for it being longer, actually. Because I was that obsessed with these characters and their story.

Overall, Bound to the Battle God is a new all-time favorite! I highly recommend picking this one up if you're up for some top notch slow burn fantasy romance. It's really worth the 600+ page investment. And now I just hope so hard that Ruby Dixon writes more books like this one!

5 stars - A new all-time favorite & one of the best books I've read this year!
