Race The Darkness by Abbie Roads ~ #Review

Source:  Purchased audio

First in a gripping paranormal romantic suspense duo by a Golden Heart finalist debut author whose clinical work gives her chilling insights...

Cursed with a terrible gift...

Criminal investigator Xander Stone doesn't have to question you—he can hear your thoughts. Scarred by lightning, burdened with a power that gives him no peace, Xander struggles to maintain his sanity against the voice that haunts him day and night—the voice of a woman begging him to save her.

A gift that threatens to engulf them...

Isleen Walker has long since given up hope of escape from the nightmare of captivity and torture that is draining her life, her mind, and her soul. Except...there is the man in her feverish dreams, the strangely beautiful man who beckons her to freedom and wholeness. And when he comes, if he comes, it will take all their combined fury and faith to overcome a madman bent on fulfilling a deadly prophecy.

I love this book.  Xander's angry confusion about his abilities and his fathers indifference make him an endearing book boyfriend.  Add to him, a character that has been brutalized for years for an unknown reason.  Isleen and Xander together are perfection.  Yes, there is a connection between them.  One that can't be denied.  And I just loved it.

The only thing better than paranormal is paranormal where the rules are undefined.  The world is our world but Xander lives in it.  Isleen dreams in it.  Most people think Xander is a grumpy, spoiled jerk.  Some people think Isleen is an abomination.  And we're along for the ride trying to piece it all together.  Suspense and paranormal blended perfectly together.  Nicely done!

Love the characters.  Xander is hot and sexy.  His need for Isleen softens him from the a$$ he is without her.  Isleen is broken yet relentless.  I love that she finds more strength somewhere - and that somewhere is Xander.  They need each other and I enjoy those kind of relationships.  Then there are the side characters.  The housekeeper is a hoot.  I'm really interested in Lathan and excited for his book.  Definitely want more from this series.

I believe this is a love it or hate it kind of series.  It's my perfect paranormal suspense formula but I recognize that not everyone will like some aspects of this book.  There is some cruel things that happen and a crazy person that I can't even think about.  But I believe it all adds to a great and enjoyable read.

Definitely want more.  Starting book two soon!
