At 21, Calla hasn’t done a lot of things. She’s never been kissed, never seen the ocean, never gone to an amusement park. But growing up, she witnessed some things no child ever should. She still carries the physical and emotional scars of living with a strung-out mother, Mona—secrets she keeps from everyone, including her close circle of college friends.

But the safe cocoon Calla has carefully built is shattered when she discovers her mom has stolen her college money and run up a huge credit card debt in her name. Now, Calla has to go back to the small town she thought she'd left behind and clean up her mom’s mess again. Of course, when she arrives at her mother’s bar, Mona is nowhere to be found. Instead, six feet of hotness named Jackson James is pouring drinks and keeping the place humming.

Sexy and intense, Jax is in Calla’s business from the moment they meet, giving her a job and helping her search for Mona. And the way he looks at her makes it clear he wants to get horizontal . . . and maybe something more. Before Calla can let him get close, though, she’s got to deal with the pain of the past—and some very bad guys out to mess her up if she doesn’t give them her mom.,%201

Totally unfazed, he moved his thumb in a slow circle over the inside of my elbow. That tiny, almost unconscious touch sent a shock wave of sensation through my system. One second I was ready to knee him in the nuts and the next I was thinking of other more pleasant things involving said nuts.
"What are you doing?" I asked again, my pulse racing and even pounding.
His chest expanded, brushing mine, and my toes curled in response. "Doing something better than sleeping."
That really wasn't an answer.
Jax dipped his head and the tip of his nose grazed my right cheek. "I like you."
My heart stopped flouncing and did a twirl on one toe. "What?"
"I like you," he repeated, voice dripping to a whisper that glided over my skin.

Course of Action: The Rescue by Lindsay McKenna and Merline Lovelace

Two edge-of-your-seat passionate military stories from bestselling authors Lindsay McKenna & Merinline Lovelace:

Jaguar Night by Lindsay McKenna:

When a U.S. General’s daughter is kidnapped, Marine Staff Sergeant Josh Patterson is handpicked to rescue her. While they trek through the jungle to safety, her strength and a surprise kiss change everything.

Amazon Gold by Merline Lovelace:

U.S. Navy Chief Charlene “Charley” Dawson deftly commands the Riverine patrol boat taking an arrogant U.S. Delta Force Army Sergeant on a very personal op. As she and Jack Halliday penetrate deeper into the Amazon after a rogue ex-pat, they face danger…and unexpected attraction.

A dangerous glint in her eye, she pushed up on tiptoe and locked her mouth on his.

The contact was hard, hot and fanned by a fury all the more explosive for being so rigidly contained.  Jack felt it spark the air around them, felt an answering heat leap up in him to meet it.

God knew he'd his share of women.  All the Sidewinders had.  He'd never bragged about his conquests, though.  Never even kept score of his hits and misses.  But none of the women who'd snagged his interest for a day or a week or a month had never set him on fire with just a kiss. (page 196-197)

This book is actually two short books in one.  I reviewed the first one Tuesday and am reviewing the second one today.

The second book, Amazon Gold by Merline Lovelace, is set in the same area - Peru and the Amazon river.  The riverboat captain is the same and reference is made to the guy from the first story.  He's a buddy of Jack's.  They grew up together with three others, the sidewinders.  Different author though and that made it a different experience.

I enjoyed this story more than the first.  Still written in third person, it had a different style.  I felt more connected to the characters and was more invested in the story.

Both military, I loved that Chief Charlie Dawson was respected for her skill and command.  Jack is Delta force, black ops.  Both had the high moral convictions and they fit together well.  Chasing a rouge former friend, they stumble into the sparks flying between them.  I really enjoyed their relationship and their communication style.

This one has suspense and romance.  It's satisfying and I read it in an afternoon.
