Make It A Double by Sawyer Bennett ~

See full tour here

Brody Markham has endured a nightmare, spending the last five years in prison and losing everything that was dear to him. Now he’s back home, trying to survive in a world he doesn’t recognize anymore. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further away from their love.

Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, she is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way that money just can’t buy.

Maybe it’s that she recognizes in Brody some of the same char- acteristics she sees in her homeless wards, but Alyssa is power- less to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.

While Brody struggles to surface from the darkness, Alyssa tries to protect her heart in case he’s not willing to accept the light that she offers him.

MAKE IT A DOUBLE can be read as a stand-alone.

My Thoughts

5 stars -  Brody makes this book perfect.  Love him so much.

First Impressions...

I was totally taken by Brody in On The Rocks.  I very much wanted to know all the details of his story.  He was so brooding, moody, gorgeous and quiet; I had to know him.  So I was desperate to read this one.

The Characters...

I knew I would love Brody but what surprised me was how much I loved Alyssa.  She comes from money but she isn't the spoiled chick who couldn't do anything for her self.  She is one strong women and her determination to run The Haven had me loving her.  It's a no kill animal shelter and she loves the animals she takes in.  She goes out of her way to make sure they are comfortable and well taken care of.  I was in complete awe of her.  It was wonderful that she was such a great character because no one less could be the girl for Brody.

Brody.  He had my heart twisted around his finger in nothing flat.  He's broken.  What was once a promising life is reduced to slinging drinks at his brothers bar and waking up at 5 AM every morning.  Those 5 years in prison were hard on him.  He's not letting anyone in, not his twin brother, his family or his friends.  And certainly not the rich chick running the animal shelter even if he does love animals.  But then he sees Alyssa in her element - with her animals and a crack forms in the brick wall he has build around his heart.  I loved that he admitted he was wrong.  I loved that he was responsible, patient, and kind.  He ignores the thoughtless looks from the ignorant people who see him as only an ex-con.  He refuses to drink - not just because it's part of his parole but because it no longer serves him.  He reacts to the problems that Alyssa is having.  He's such a good guy.   The real thing.

And after I fell completely in love with him, he broke my heart into pieces and I was contemplating if it was illegal to take out a fictional character.  Not Brody, of course, but those that hurt him.  The first book in this series was okay but this one was perfect and Brody is why.

The Story...

I loved Brody and Alyssa's story.  They are immediately attracted to each other but the feeling develop as they work together.  Then a common and unexpected bond brings them closer.  It made the story real and had the pages flying by.  There were even a few surprises for me.

I can't wait for more from this series.  I'll be hoping for any and all glimpses of these two among the pages.

Could I Put It Down...

I read it over two night but most of it was in one night.  No choice but to set it down but I really didn't want to.  I would have read it straight threw if I'd had the time.  It's the kind of book that you don't pause while reading.  I just kept flipping the pages because I had to know what was going to happen next.

In The End...

My favorite of the two books by far, this book will appeal to the New Adult crowd and the contemporary romance crowd.  It stands alone, so no worries if you haven't read On The Rocks.

If you love the brooding, quiet alpha male that has given up on a relationship but then has his armor cracked, then this book should be your next read.
