One kiss could be the last.
Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.
Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.
But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.
5 stars - Totally in love with the sexy gargoyles and a certain smokin' hot demon...I mean this book!
Only the author that made aliens sexy could have me so in love with stony gargoyles and torn up and undecided over a love triangle.
I'm completely taken by this new world that Armentrout has created. Once again, she has managed to take one twist to a modern world and come up with a totally convincing paranormal world. Wardens have always been around but the world has only know for the last ten years when Hell exploded with too many demons to fight covertly. I love how she adds the bigotry towards them by people who just don't have a clue what the wardens are actually doing. It so mirrors reality.
Layla is half warden, half demon. Unsure of who her parents are, she's not really part of either world. Though she was raised to be warden since the age of seven, she struggles to keep her demon side in check. Not accepted by most wardens, she relies on her adopted father and Zayne, his sexy warden son. Her feeling for Zayen are much more than friendly but she can't offer him warden children and the relationship would never be allowed. So their friends. I don't buy it on either side. Zayne is supposed to be courting another but he's resistant and he clearly has strong feeling for his Layla bug. While we didn't spend a lot of time with him, it was clear their relationship is strong and I do really like Zayne. I would be totally down for advocating for this couple if it weren't for Roth, the sexy demon. I think this is the first time I have ever been so torn between which guy I think the girl should end up with. I should know by now who I want to get the girl. But I don't. I really don't.
Roth made me nervous, he's a demon after all. And not just any demon it turns out - but I'll leave that for you to learn. But he's there time and time again to protect Layla. He sees things from a little different point of view than she was raised with. He makes her think and question. Oh, and he can kiss her. If she kisses anyone else with a soul - they'll die. So those yummy kisses are quite convincing for his side. But I couldn't let go of Zayne. With the ending, I'm even more torn.
Yes, the ending. Here's the deal, peeps. The ending had me screaming and freakin' about how long I would have to wait to find out what happens next. Cliff hanger? Can you call it that? I suppose but it broke my heart and restarted it and then I just wanted to pout. Only JLA could have the power over me to accomplish this. I am torn up and unsure how to even pick up another book. I needed book two - like the second I finished the first.
Oh course you MUST read this one. It's so good. I read it with my friend Jessica and it's a good thing because we were able to freak out together, discuss and try to figure out what comes next. If you have ever read a JLA book and enjoyed it, then this one should be next. If you love PRN, then this one should be next. If you love to read, then this one should be next.
