My Summary:
Dez has a secret. Her secret can't be shared with her best friend Jace or the Narolym, an enemy race of shape-shifters. But when her own Council lowers the barrier that protects her Shythe haven, Dez is suddenly facing more problems than protecting her secret. And as Dez is forced to confront her own shape-shifting abilities, she must choose between protecting her secret and trusting a Narolym that could change everything. Even as Dez finds out why the Narolym really came to her protected home, she discovers that her choices may be the only thing left to protect her people from war. That choice seems sure to risk the very one she loves the most.
My Thoughts:
5 stars - a must read
Destiny's Fire is only the second SteamPunk book I've read. I really wasn't sure what to expect since I don't have a lot of experience reading this genre. Let me just say that if they're like this book, sign me up to read a lot more.
I was quickly pulled into the world of the shape-shifting guardians, descended from those that protected the Egyptian pharaohs. This wasn't just another shifter book with the same old lure, no this book shifts into charge and flame powered action so different from other shifter books that I was hanging onto the pages as they flipped quickly by. Grounded solidly in a future world that seems familiar but then add gadgets, corsets, hovercraft, and charged weapons - I couldn't get enough.
Dez is a fabulously strong female lead. I liked her right away. She struggled and worried about protecting her mom and her secret but she has an inner strength that steers her right. And as she faces challenges and surprises, she grows. I like that about a character. They need to become more over the course of book or I just don't care about them. I was quickly Team Jace as I got to know one of the gorgeous triplets. But Reese did a number on my heart. How can anyone choose between these two incredible guys? Don't know who I feel more for - Dez for having to pick or the one that doesn't get picked? Needless to say I was very attached to the characters in this book.
The plot was fast paced, action packed and had me shocked on more than one occasion. I easily would have finished this book in one setting if it hadn't been for needed to go to bed so I could work the next day. The ending of this story didn't have me throwing the book - no I'm satisfied but looking forward to book two. When was the last time I could say that? It's been a while. =)
If you read YA, then this one is a must read! Trish weaves a bold, powerful tale that I won't soon be forgetting.
