The Vixen's Lead (Kit Davenport #1) by Tate James ~ Review

The Vixen's Lead (Kit Davenport #1) by Tate James

I want vengeance so badly that I can almost taste it. It's all I've ever wanted. So, I did what anyone in my unique position would do. I slapped on a secret identity and became an internationally renowned thief, known as The Fox. Nobody knows me. Nobody can catch me.

Or so I thought...

It turns out; I have what they want. Special abilities. And trust me, these abilities are coveted--and dangerous. Now, I don't know who to trust or where to go. Peril lurks on every corner as I try to uncover my past and origin. Teaming up with unlikely allies may be my only chance at survival or my biggest mistake. Only time will tell.

I'm Kit Davenport and this is only the beginning.

I'm always on the lookout for two things: book(s)/series to get obsessed with, and super good reverse harem books. So when I just so happen to come across a title that covers both of these criteria, I am on cloud 9. My most recent find of this variety is The Vixen's Lead, book 1 of the Kit Davenport series.

It was really a shot in the dark that I picked this one up. I was looking through Kindle Unlimited trying to pick something to read, but nothing was sticking out to me. So I started clicking on RH-looking, paranormal-y books. And lo and behold, I came across The Vixen's Lead. What drew me in was the lack of information about Kit's harem in the synopsis. On Amazon, it says its RH but there's nothing about who they are--their names, personalities, how they meet. So OF COURSE I had to download the thing and give it a go.

My first impression? I wasn't all that into it. Honestly, I was considering DNFing the thing. Kit seemed cool but I wasn't sure I was getting into her storyline. And the two boys we'd met who were clearly going to be part of the RH? Seemed like they were going to be flops. But I hate DNFing books. And there were still more boys to meet (I didn't know how many, but I knew there had to be at least one more because 2 does not constitute a harem). So I kept going.

Let me tell you, friends: I am so glad I kept reading. Those boys who seemed like they were going to be flops? Weren't. One is a certified sweetheart. And the other...well. He's growing on me. And I am definitely very interested in Kit's story. And I really ended up enjoying her narration.

And the other boys in the harem? Y E S. Cole is my favorite. But I'm loving seeing Kit's relationships with them develop and evolve--and I'm so looking forward to seeing them progress more as the series continues!

As for the overall plot, I'm not going to say it's my favorite thing ever. It is, however, quite interesting. I definitely want to read more. So much so that as soon as I finish writing this review, I'm going to start book 2. I'd say that's a plot that's drawn me in, yes? (Though let's be honest: that RH waiting on the pages helps keep me on the hook in its own right.)

Overall, The Vixen's Lead is a solid, enjoyable series starter. Personally, I cannot wait to dive more into the series and see the romance bloom even further while the rest of Kit's story unravels. If you're looking for a super good RH series to get stuck in, I definitely say The Vixen's Lead is one to check out!

4 stars - A solid, enjoyable starter to what I can tell is going to be my next series obsession!

Sexy: Luke & Elise’s First Night (Book #1.25)

Exclusive Excerpt:

Piper and Jordan had moved to the area in January the previous year, and when they had first moved, it had been all about getting situated. Jordan had settled into his new job while Piper had to search for her own. Then, before she had known it, it had been May, and she was a widow.
After that had come his funeral and sorting out all the paperwork after someone passed, all while trying to deal with grief. For a while, the only people Piper had seen outside of work were her mom and Nate. She had just wanted to be left alone. Socializing took too much energy.
But she’d slowly started coming back to life a few months ago, and that was when Nate had really started bringing his friends around. She knew he’d been afraid that she’d be lonely with no family in the area. She felt like she was almost back to normal. Well, her new normal because she was never going to be the same person she had been before Jordan passed away.
And, now, she was grateful that Nate had introduced her to Elise. The two of them got along great, and while Nate was her best friend, sometimes, a lady just needed some girl time. They still didn’t know each other that well, but Piper hoped that could change.
Nate and Luke burst through the front door, shirtless, sweaty, and laughing. They went straight to the food without a word to either of the women and dug in like they hadn’t eaten for a week. Neither of them bothered to sit either; both stood on the other side of the counter.
“I apologize for my husband’s table manners—or lack thereof,” Elise said.
Luke looked up from stuffing his face. “Wha—” he said around a mouthful of food, his brown eyes gleaming with humor.
“You’re a pig,” Elise said.
Nate nestled in the corner of the counter and laughed.
Luke swallowed and smiled. “But I’m your pig.”
Elise shook her head and rolled her eyes, but Piper saw she was hiding a smile.
“Apologies, Piper,” Luke said. “I’m hungry.”
Elise turned to Piper. “Do you care if I get a glass of water?”
Piper jumped from the stool, feeling like a terrible hostess. “Oh my God, I’m sorry.”
“No, you don’t have to get up,” Elise protested, also rising from her seat.
“Yes, I do. My mother would pass out from shame if I didn’t take care of my company.”
Elise sat back down and laughed. “I understand.”
She looked around to the two guys. “Water okay with you guys, too?” she asked as she walked around to Nate and Luke’s side.
“I can get my own, you know,” Nate said.
It was true. He wasn’t really a guest in her home anymore. He raided her fridge whenever he was hungry and helped himself to whatever he needed without asking anymore.
“That’s okay,” she said as she opened the cupboard and reached up for the glasses.
But Nate went for them at the same time she did. As he reached from behind her, she felt his naked chest against her back. A tingle went down her spine, straight to her belly, and she dropped her hands to the counter as she tried to fight a slight tremor.
Apparently, her libido hadn’t died with Jordan. It had just gone dormant. And she didn’t know what to do with it if it was coming back.

About R.L. Kenderson:

R.L. Kenderson is two best friends writing under one name. Renae has always loved reading, and in third grade, she wrote her first poem where she learned she might have a knack for this writing thing. Lara remembers sneaking her grandmother’s Harlequin novels when she was probably too young to be reading them, and since then, she knew she wanted to write her own. When they met in college, they bonded over their love of reading and the TV show Charmed. What really spiced up their friendship was when Lara introduced Renae to romance novels. When they discovered their first vampire romance, they knew there would always be a special place in their hearts for paranormal romance. After being unable to find certain storylines and characteristics they wanted to read about in the hundreds of books they consumed, they decided to write their own. One lives in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and the other in the Kansas City area where they’re a sonographer/stay-at-home mom/wife and pharmacist/mother by day, and together they’re a sexy author by night. They communicate through phone, email, and whole lot of messaging. You can find them at http://www.rlkenderson.com, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, and Goodreads. Excerpt:

I tried to keep myself from wincing. “No, that’s all right. I don’t need to talk about anything.”
“Okay, then you listen while I do the talking.” He moved toward me and came to a stop directly in front of me. “I’m only here for a short time.”
He didn’t say anything else so I guessed that was his big ta-da moment. But I still didn’t understand what that had to do with me. “Okay. So what does that have to do with last night?”
“I’m a drifter. I never stay in one place long. It keeps things from getting too complicated that way.”
“Well, I sure the hell didn’t ask you to stay for the summer. That’s on you…or possibly your uncle.”
“I know that.” He sighed. “Look, I just need a quiet place to lay low for a while until I figure out where I’m heading next. But once I do, I’m leaving.”
“So? I still don’t get—”
He held up a hand to stop me. “You aren’t the type of woman who’s okay with being left behind.”
I wasn’t sure why that statement annoyed me, but it did. “You don’t know anything about me.”
He shrugged one muscled shoulder. “Let’s just say that I’m more perceptive than you think.”
“Apparently not. Because I have news for you, Seth. Last night, I planned on taking you back to my home, having my way with you, and kicking your ass out of my bed before the sun came up.”
“Oh, I know,” he said with a grin. “But you wouldn’t have asked me to leave once you got me into bed. That’s why I stopped the whole thing from happening.”
I rolled my eyes so hard that they hurt. “You really must think you’re something to make a statement like that. Maybe it would’ve been the other way around. Ever thought of that? Perhaps you would’ve been begging me to let you stay while my foot shoved your ass out the door.”
His mouth quirked with amusement. Yeah, he wasn’t buying it for a minute. Maybe he really was more perceptive than I thought. After all, he was related to Junior. “Is that a challenge?” he asked smugly.
Jeez. Was there no end to this guy’s arrogance?
His gaze scanned down my body and back up to my chest as he said, “Don’t get me wrong, Bobbie. I’m not the right guy for you. You clearly need someone who is going to stick around on a more permanent basis. That’s not me. But I’m more than happy to keep you warm until he shows up.”
Figures. Seth Landry had a special skill-set, all right, but it had nothing to do with hammering nails and everything to do with getting tangled in sheets. Because if that kiss he’d planted on me last night was any indication, the man wasn’t lying about his skills in the bedroom. That was one thing I would bet my life on.

Moonlight Seduction (de Vincent #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout ~ Review

Moonlight Seduction (de Vincent, #2)Source: eARC provided by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Moonlight Seduction (de Vincent #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

The de Vincent brothers are back—and so is the intrigue that surrounds them—in New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout’s sizzling new novel...

Nicolette Bresson never thought she’d return to the de Vincents’ bayou compound. It’s where her parents work, where Nikki grew up... and where she got her heart broken by Gabriel de Vincent himself. Yet here she is, filling in for her sick mother. Avoiding Gabe should be easy, especially when so much of Nikki’s time is spent trying not to be stabbed in the back by the malicious hangers-on who frequent the mansion. But escaping memories of Gabe, much less his smoking-hot presence, is harder than expected—especially since he seems determined to be in Nikki’s space as much as possible.

Gabriel spent years beating himself up over his last encounter with Nikki. He’d wanted her then, but for reasons that were bad for both of them. Things have now changed. Gabe sees more than a girl he’s known forever; he sees a smart, talented, and heartbreakingly beautiful woman... one who’s being stalked from the shadows. Now, Gabe will do anything to keep Nikki safe—and to stop the de Vincent curse from striking again.

While I adore JLA and her books, I was nervous to pick this one up. Mostly I was worried I wouldn't like it as much as I wanted to. With Gabe's past, and what went on with Nikki and Gabe years before...it set up a romance I wasn't sure would go the distance for me. Luckily I ended up really enjoying it!

First and foremost I adored the characters. Nikki was awesome. Her sass was perfect. And Rosie! Such a cool, fun friend--whom I believe is the love interest for Devlin? I am BEYOND excited to see that. Speaking of those de Vincent brothers, they're always compelling to read about. They're all so complex, and Gabe was no different...but more on him in a minute.

With book 1 in this series, Moonlight Sins, I was more into the romance than the plot. This installment was the complete opposite; I was so into the storyline. So much so that I literally could not put the book down and read the entire thing in basically one sitting. There were no parts that particularly dragged for me or made me want to do anything but continue reading. It was a great reading experience.

The romance, however, has me on the fence. As I said at the beginning of this review, Gabe's past, along with the past tied with Nikki, was kind of tough for me to get over. It's a delicate balance. I very much appreciated Gabe's emotional progression throughout the novel. I will also point out that there were many swoons to be had--of both the sweet and sexy variety. Gabe and Nikki have amazing chemistry. I think my only issue is that they took so long to become solidly TOGETHER, and then by the time they were the book was over. So basically I wasn't as in love with the romance as I wanted to be--and Gabe's behavior made it take much longer than expected (practically forever...it was near the end of the novel) to win me over.

Overall, Gabe & Nikki's story was passionate, enthralling, and I really liked it! If you're looking for a romance with some off the charts chemistry, I'd say to make sure you get your hands on this baby.

4 stars - A passionate and enthralling romance!

  EXCERPT

The hospital is a beacon of light and hope as we pull in. I barely remember to put my car in park before I jump out and I leave it in the middle of the lane, the tires wrenched haphazardly toward the curb.

“Ma’am, you can’t park there,” a guy in a security uniform says with his fake badge, but I don’t answer. I toss him my keys and push my way to the doors, and that’s when I see him.
My son.
They’ve pulled him out of the ambulance, and he’s so still, so white. He’s got the body of a man and the face of a boy, and he’s got vomit in his hair. One hand dangles over the edge of the gurney, orange flecks dripping from his fingers to the floor, but no one notices, no one cares.
“Beck,” I breathe, and he doesn’t open his eyes. “Beck,” I say louder, as loud as I can. His mouth is slack, but he’s not dead, he can’t be dead because someone is pumping his heart with her fist. She’s running next to the gurney, and she’s pounding on his heart, making it beat.
“Coming through,” she yells at the doors, and there is a team of people working on him. They’re frantic, and that’s not good.
I chase after them, through the emergency room, through the people, but someone grabs me at a giant set of double-doors, the gateway to the important rooms.
“You can’t go in there,” a nurse tells me.
“That’s my son,” I try to tell her, but she doesn’t care. “Beck,” I scream, and I try to see through the windows, but I can’t because he’s gone. “I love you, Beck. Stay here. Stay here.”
The nurse grasps my arm, and I can’t stand anymore. My legs are tired and the adrenaline… it numbs me. I collapse beside her and she tries to hold me up, but she can’t… I’m on the ground.
My face is wet, when did I start crying?
“You have to save my son,” I beg her, my fingers curled into her arm. I stare into her eyes. Hers are green, ringed with blue, and she looks away. Something about her seems so familiar, something about those eyes.
“We’ll try, ma’am,” she says uncertainly. It’s the uncertainty that kills me. “We’ll do everything we can. I’m going to take you to a quiet room, and give you a blanket. Is there anyone I can call for you?”
I shake my head. “No. I already called my sister.”
“Okay,” the nurse says quietly and her name tag says Jessica. She takes me to a waiting room, a quiet private one, the ones they use when the outcome might not be good. I know that because I’ve been here before.
I swallow hard and she puts a cup of coffee in my hand.
As she does, she pushes a stray hair out of her face and her bracelet catches my eye. A simple chain with a silver dolphin on it. I’ve seen it before.
“You were here the night my husband was brought in,” I realize slowly. “Weren’t you? Do you remember me?”
It was a year ago. A year, two months… I check my watch… six days and twenty-two hours ago. Of course she doesn’t remember me.
But Jessica nods.
“I’m so sorry about your husband,” she tells me now, her voice quiet and thick. “I swear to you, we did everything we could.”
“I know,” I tell her. Because I do. The accident was so bad, there’s no way anyone could’ve survived. Except for Beck. He lived. But Matt...his injuries were insurmountable. That’s what the doctor told me that night.
I stare at the door, and this is the same room and that is the same door, and this is the same blue-tiled floor. For a minute, I’m back in that moment, and the doctor is coming in. I’d waited for hours and his face was so grave and I knew, I knew, before he could utter a word.
I shook my head because I didn’t want to hear what was coming next, but he spoke anyway.
Matt’s injuries were insurmountable, he’d said. We did everything we could.
But everything wasn’t enough, and my husband died.
“Is it a different doctor tonight?” I ask suddenly. “I need a different doctor. One who can save my son.”
I know it’s illogical. I know it was never the doctor’s fault, but it doesn’t matter because Jessica is nodding. “It’s a different doctor tonight,” she tells me. “Dr. Grant, and he’s very, very good.”
“Okay,” I whisper. “Okay.”
“If you need anything, you tell me,” Jessica says and I can see that she means it. She likes me. Or she feels sorry for me. It doesn’t matter which. I nod and she’s gone, and I’m alone.
Just like I was a year ago, and just like that night all I can do is pace.
I’m a caged mama wolf and there’s nothing I can do, but I know that if I stop moving, Beck might die. My energy is attached to his energy. I have to move. It all depends on me.
So I walk in circles.
I walk six paces, over the six white tiles, then I turn, taking three steps over the blue. I tread back six paces over the white, and then turn again, taking three more over the blue.
I will not stop, Beck. I won’t fail you. I won’t.
It becomes rhythmic, and I match my breaths with my steps. I’m a machine, a time-keeper, a being made of clock-work as I walk in circles, marking time. Every step I take, Beck is still alive. I feel it in my heart. It’s all up to me.

He moved forward, maybe a foot or two, but stopped like one would if they were approaching a rabid dog. A heartbeat passed. “Your hair . . .” He tilted his head to the side. “It’s different.”
“Yeah, it is.” Her hair used to be a rather dull medium brown, but then she found this amazing hair stylist in Tuscaloosa and turned her brown hair into this array of blondes and browns, using some weird technique called balayage. “It’s basically just highlights and stuff.” “Stuff.”
His gaze flickered over the bun. Uncomfortable, she scanned the kitchen. “And my hair is longer. A lot longer.”
His brows lifted.
Was she really telling him the length of her hair? This was the most strained conversation she’d ever had in her life. And that was, well, it was sad. She peeked at him. It used to not be this way. Back before . . . well, before she ruined everything, he’d be teasing her and asking about her college. He’d be talking to her like he could actually stand being in the same room with her.
She needed this conversation to be over like it was yesterday and she also needed to figure out how she could work here and not run into Gabe. The house was big enough that it should be possible. “I need to get back to—”
“Planting your face against the over door?”
Her shoulders slumped. “Actually, I need to finish the potatoes. So, if you’ll excuse me.” She started to turn away, praying that he’d just leave.
“That’s it? That’s all you have to say to me? Because I have a lot I need to say to you,” he said. “Never in a million years did I think I’d see you here again.”
Nikki’s spine stiffened like steel had been poured into it. Oh God. Her throat spasmed.
“We need to talk.”
“No we don’t,” she said quickly. “We do not need to talk about anything.”
“Bullshit,” he snapped, and his voice was so much closer that she turned to him on instinct.
Gabe was now at the edge of the massive island, only two or three feet from her. She stepped back into the counter. Her heart thundered in her chest as her gaze flicked to the kitchen door.
“No one is coming near here,” he said as if reading her mind. Her gaze flew back to his. “Dev is in his office on the second floor, in a meeting and your father is out with the landscaper. No one is going to hear us.”
A weird mixture of sensations assaulted her. One was a chill that skated down her spine. The other was a tight, hot shiver that danced over her skin.
Gabe kept coming at her, not stopping until he was right in front of her, separated by a few inches. She sucked in air, catching the crisp, clean scent of his cologne. It reminded her of storms, of that night.
That was the last thing she wanted to be reminded of.
Like his brother, he was a good head and then some taller than her, so right now, her eyes were fastened to his chest.
Thank God he was wearing a shirt.
“I . . . I don’t want to talk,” she managed to say.
“I do.”
“Gabe—”
“You owe me this.”
Her body jerked as she pressed her lips together. He was right. She owed him a conversation. “Okay.”
There was another beat of silence and then he asked in a voice so low she almost didn’t believe she heard him right.
“Did I hurt you that night?”

I'm a total JLA fan.  While I really enjoyed Moonlight Sins, I had a different reaction to this one.  I loved it.

There is so much going on in this book.  The secrets that were disclosed from the first book and the impact they're having, the freaky house, and the very complex relationship between Gabe and Nik are all just a part of it.  Strange things keep happening to Nikki.  What is going on and who's responsible or it is the house???  This author does a great job of making you wonder.  And it's so fun to try and figure out all the little clues.

As for the characters, most of our time is focused on Gabe and Nikki.  Of course, we see the happy Lucian and Julia.  The scary as all get out Devlin is there with his down right cruel fiancee Sabrina.  Grrrr...I really do not like Sabrina.  Maybe hate is the right word.  And her creepy brother Parker?  He's definitely in the hate zone.  Both of them make me want to reach inside the book and slap them.  As you can see, my emotions are involved, always a good sign.

But the favorite?  It's Gabe.  Yeah, he's doing this yo-yo thing where he says things that make me mad and then he's a sweet as he can be but I still end up loving him.  He's conflicted.  He wants Nik, probably since they saw each other last...yeah that.  No telling on that.  Read it for yourself.  But there are lots of issues.  The ten year difference in their age is the simplest of the issues but Gabe can't seem to get his head wrapped around all of them and figure out what he really wants.  His heart knows.  His mind keeps debating it.  But the thing is that he has the biggest heart and the kindest soul of any of the brothers.  He brings her smoothies and does other really thoughtful things.  The whole...yeah not telling you that either but it's sweet!  And the way he loves her?  Smokin' hot and yummy all mixed together to make him capture my heart.

Nikki is strong and I really admire her willingness to help her mom when it's super hard on her.  Her mom has no idea just how hard it is for her to walk back in the de Vincent estate.  But she does it.  And she isn't this demur little girl that bows her head and does what she's told.  Nope.  She talks back to even the scary Devlin.  I loved that about her.  When she told Gabe to clean his own rooms, I cheered!

Of course, I still have questions.  I had so many at the end of Moonlight Sins.  Some are answered and new ones have joined on the list.  Oh, there's one in particular that I really want to know the answer to.  I NEED book three to find out the truth.  I assume we will finally get all the answers in that book.  Is it January yet?

This is a good one.  If you love to put the pieces together as well has have the sexy nice and hot, then you don't want to miss this one.  I do think you can read it as stand alone.  While you will enjoy it more if you've read Moonlight Sins, there is enough explanation to get by without it.

Don't pass this one by.  Good stuff, right here.
