ABOUT WITHOUT MERIT:

The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.

Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines, when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.

Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.

Poignant and powerful, WITHOUT MERIT explores the layers of lies that tie a family together and the power of love.

How does one write a review for this book?  It is a challenge to say the least.  It is, of course, a masterpiece by one of the very best there is, Colleen Hoover.  This quote from Sagan says much to explain this book:

Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.

This is the Voss family as seen through Merit, a seventeen year old.  They are not average by any stretch of the imagination and yet they are.  They have secrets, skeletons, and dirty laundry.  The town looks down on them.  And Merit seems to be the keeper of the secrets - she struggles to hold them tightly concealed as the family pretends to be normal.  As normal as they can be with so many secrets.  And while they may be extreme, it does share light on the fact that we all hold secrets we don't wish to hold to the light of day.  We guard them protectively against the judgement of others.  How, then, can a teenage girl be expected to hold them all inside her as she struggles with arguably one of the hardest times of her life, high school.  All the while falling for a guy she knows she shouldn't be attracted to.  Is it no wonder that she makes mistakes?  As we all would.  And if you feel like you have no better idea of what this book is about after reading my review, then you are perfectly placed to read it.  And you should read it.

The writing is perfection.  The characters are beyond real to the point of being representational of what a family is.  Each character represents an aspect of families that many struggle with all brought together from the point of view of a teenager.  It is a modern classic.  And the story itself?  It twists and turns and lives a life of it's own so very much as a teens life goes.  The reader can but hold on for the ride.

As with all of Colleen Hoover's books, this one is perfectly crafted to entertain, delight and cause thoughts to bubble to the surface of the reader.  It is a book that should not be missed and is hard to put down.  It will carry you away to wonder about trophies, long lost family members,  mistakes, forgiveness and being a family.  Don't miss it.
