Revenge is easy, but justice is worth fighting for…

Kenna is tired of being lied to—and hunted by the very allies she once trusted. Unearthing the dark secrets of the superhero world has not only endangered her life, now her boyfriend faces execution for crimes he didn’t commit and her mother is being held captive in a secret governmental prison.

Kenna is determined to stand up for what’s right and save those she loves from unspeakable fates. It’s time for the betrayal to end. It’s time for the real criminals to face justice.

But the truth is even more terrifying than Kenna could imagine. A conspiracy threatens the fate of heroes, villains, and all of humanity. If Kenna’s going to survive, she must draw on her deepest strength: her resilience. Because when Kenna’s pushed to the limit, she doesn’t break down. She fights back.

Top Five Favorite Kick Butt Heroines by Tracy Deebs

I love girls who can kick butt—I love reading about them and I love writing them. Whether I’m writing mermaids or a cyber-Armageddon story or superheroes, I love creating strong female characters who are smart, kind, and more than capable of kicking some serious butt.  I also love that current YA novels are filled with heroines who can, and do, just that on a regular basis. The following are my absolute favorites.

5. Saba from Blood Red Road by Moira Young—The dialect in this book took some getting used to for me, but I fell for Saba right away. She’s probably the toughest YA heroine (or hero) I’ve ever read, and I love her so much. Reading about her as she negotiates a very Mad Max dystopian world is, by turns, fascinating, terrifying, and heart-wrenching.

4. Yukiko from Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff—I love this book so much. Japanese Steampunk is cool as hell, it’s got something for everyone. Amazing world-building, cool swordfights, amazing fantasy, and a heroine that it’s impossible not to like…and be a little afraid of. Yukiko kicks some serious butt and I adore her.

3. Lily from The Farm trilogy by Emily McKay—I fell in love with Lily in the first couple chapters of this book, and my admiration for her only grew as the trilogy played out. In the first couple chapters of the first book, Lily gets in a massive, hand-to-hand combat fight with Carter, the hero of the trilogy. And she absolutely kicks his butt. From that moment on, I was sold on her (the scene is actually one of my top five favorite scenes in YA EVER). The fact that she manages to rescue herself and her autistic sister from the Farm and the clutches of blood-sucking Ticks only makes her even better J

2. Mercy Thompson from the Mercy Thompson books by Patricia Briggs—I know she isn’t technically a YA heroine, but I love, love, love Mercy so much! She’s tough and smart and cunning, and she never, never gives up. But she’s also kind and compassionate and very understanding of others, even people who are trying to hurt her. My favorite thing about Mercy, though, is that no matter how hard she gets knocked down, no matter how badly she gets hurt, she always finds a way to get back up…and to stay true to herself while she does.

1. Hermione Granger from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling—I know the argument can be made that she’s a middle grade heroine, but the series ends when she’s 17, so I’m calling her YA. Besides, it’s Hermione freaking Granger. She could be anything and I would adore her. Brilliant, bold, tough, talented, and she still looks amazing in a dress? What else could any reader ask for? She is, by far, my all-time favorite!!!!!

So, how about you? Who is your favorite YA heroine?
