Hold Your Breath by Katie Ruggle ~ Author Interview & Giveaway

In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder…

As the captain of Field County’s ice rescue dive team, Callum Cook is driven to perfection. But when he meets new diver Louise “Lou” Sparks, all that hard-won order is obliterated in an instant. Lou is a hurricane. A walking disaster. And with her, he’s never felt more alive…even if keeping her safe may just kill him.

Lou’s new to the Rockies, intent on escaping her controlling ex, and she’s determined to make it on her own terms…no matter how tempting Callum may be. But when a routine training exercise unearths a body, Lou and Callum find themselves thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who will stop at nothing to silence Lou—and prove that not even her new Search and Rescue family can keep her safe forever.

While she still misses her off-grid, solar- and wind-powered house in the Rocky Mountains, she now lives in Rochester, Minnesota near her family. KatieRugglehttp://katieruggle.com/

Val had the opportunity to interview this author!

This book is set in the Rocky Mountains. I adore the Rockies as they are my neighbor to the west. Why did you decide on this location?

Hi Neighbor! :) I lived in an off-grid house in the Colorado Rockies until last year, when I moved to Minnesota to be closer to family. Before writing the Search and Rescue series, I was brainstorming with my editor about book ideas. During our phone and email conversations, I’d mention random things that had happened to me—like how I’d just scraped the creosote out of my outdoor wood boiler flue, then went inside, glanced in a mirror and startled myself by how very chimney-sweep I looked. Another day, I was standing at the edge of my property (the only place I could get cell reception until I installed a signal booster), talking to my editor on the phone as a herd of elk grazed across the street and coyotes yipped in the distance. Then there was the time my very odd neighbor stopped by for a chat to share his conspiracy theories. After hearing about all of these things, my editor suggested setting my books where I lived, so I did.

Callum sounds very structured and controlled. Is there a reason for this control?

I think to Callum, structure means security. When he was growing up with his free-spirited and somewhat flaky mother, there were no rules. He mentions having to learn to fix things at a young age, because, if he didn’t, things would just stay broken. To him, showing love means taking care of someone by providing that structure he so loves (and also helping them get organized :)). This creates some strain in his relationship with Lou, since she’s determined to hold on to her newfound independence.

I love that you describe Lou as a hurricane. Is there a backstory to her walking disaster?

Until she broke free of her controlling family and ran to the Rockies, Lou allowed everyone else to make her decisions for her. To keep the peace, she let her parents choose her college, her major, her career—even her almost-fiancĂ©. She didn’t really discover who she was until she was twenty-six and trying to survive the winter in her mountain cabin. When her hurricane-like personality finally emerges, Lou is at the point where she embraces her energy and enthusiasm and chaos-causing ways and thinks, “This is me, and I’m magnificent.”
