Better When He's Bad (Welcome to the Point, #1) by Jay Crownover

Welcome to the Point

There’s a difference between a bad boy and a boy who’s bad . . . meet Shane Baxter.

Sexy, dark, and dangerous, Bax isn’t just from the wrong side of the tracks, he is the wrong side of the tracks. A criminal, a thug, and a brawler, he’s the master of bad choices, until one such choice landed him in prison for five years. Now Bax is out and looking for answers, and he doesn’t care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get them. But there’s a new player in the game, and she’s much too innocent, much too soft…and standing directly in his way.

Dovie Pryce knows all about living a hard life and the tough choices that come with it. She’s always tried to be good, tried to help others, and tried not to let the darkness pull her down. But the streets are fighting back, things have gone from bad to worse, and the only person who can help her is the scariest, sexiest, most complicated ex-con The Point has ever produced.

Bax terrifies her, but it doesn’t take Dovie long to realize that some boys are just better when they’re bad.

My Thoughts:

4 stars - Lost in the pages and needing to know more!

I have loved every Jay Crownover book that I've read and here's why.  She has a way of drawing me into a story with strong characters and real issues that has me flipping the pages unable to stop.

Enter Bax.  He's the bad in bad boy.  A thief and an ex-con, he's trying to find his best friend...the best friend who got him put behind bars for 5 years.  He wants answers but he wants to get that best friend out of whatever trouble that's following him.  Oh and that best friends sister?  Yeah, he's taking care of her.

Bax is a bad boy.  But he something more in him.  He cares.  Not about most things but about a few.  And don't be getting in the way of those few cause you're gonna end up bloody.  That passion is what makes Bax the kind of really bad, bad boy that I just loved.

Dovie grew up in foster care and now she's making her way with two jobs and night school in the inner city or The Point.  She has this innocent side that I just didn't quite buy but it worked for her.  It appeals to Bax.  Somehow she's protected herself from the worst of her upbringing.  It was the only part of the story that fell flat for me.  It was that part of her that had me questioning how Bax and Dovie could work.  Luckily that didn't last long, cause they really did work.

The story was strong.  I was totally lost in the pages, needing to know where Race was and what had him hiding.  As the pieces fell together, I was falling for Race too.  He's protecting his best friend and his sister.  He's trying to deal with his jerk dad and the goons that went after both him and his best friend to begin with.  And when I saw at the end that he was the focus of the next book, I was thrilled.

If you are a Jay Crownover fan, then you need to read this book.  If you love New Adult with a little bit of an edge, then you need to read this book.  If you love tatted up bad boys, then you need to read this book.  If you love a great story that has more than romance woven through the pages, then you need to read this book.  Read it in a night.  Loved it.  Check it out.

  1. Haven't read about really bad boys in quite some time. It totally depend. They need to be coherent with their bad side but also have something loveable in them of course, otherwise I couldn't be able to relate to them and actually follow their ups and downs in the book...the problem is that sometimes they go from hell-bad to fuzzy-bunny-type through the book, and that's not acceptable.

  6. What I love about bad boys is that deep down they are actually good - they just need to find the right girl :)

  7. I love their intensity! Nothing will ever be boring with them. Even when they mess shit up they do it but then they do everything they can to make it up to you. Their intensity makes them love harder and fight harder for what they want.

  9. I like bad boys who have a heart of gold. Or, at least, they -sometimes- have a heart of gold :) They can kick some ass, but then be really sweet too :)
