Rise (Eve #3) by Anna Carey ~ Tour stop & Giveaway

Conversation Interview with Eve:

Hey, Eve.  Thanks for talking to me today. Things have been really hard for you.  How do you keep going?

E: Any way I can.  After I left the City there were times I didn’t think we were going to survive. I was told not to talk too much about what actually happened in the wild, but there were two specific incidents on the road that put us in a lot of danger. Beatrice was a support through it, and without her I don’t know if we would’ve made it. The overwhelming feeling that I have now, months later, is that I’m happy to be alive. Each day means more to me.

Tell us something we won’t learn about you in the book…

E: Even though I’ve hiked and driven across most of the west, I still hope one day to travel to another country. It’s impossible now, the way the world is, but I still think about it often. When I was in school I loved art history, and I’ve studied paintings from the different museums in Europe. I’d always imagined going there. The City has done what it can to bring culture and art here, to the desert, but a miniature Eiffel Tower can’t compare to the real one. My hope is the world changes enough, grows enough, that one day those trips will be possible.

What about Caleb, what’s something about him that we won’t learn in the book?

E: Caleb is usually pretty serious, but when he laughs it’s hilarious. He does this weird sniffle-snort type thing. His eyes squeeze shut and it looks like he’s about to cry. After everything that’s happened, we joke around more, about anything really. It feels so good to laugh with him.

What did you notice first about Caleb when you met him?

E: I was mainly thinking: ACK! Boy! Bear! What the heck am I going to do?!?!? It’s hard to notice much when you’re convinced you’re three seconds from death. But when he slowed the horse and I finally looked at him...I knew he was cute, yes, but it was like looking at a completely different species. I hadn’t seen a boy in so long. It was like brain overload. I was taking everything in at once—his eyes, his shoulders, his dark hair (which used to be such a mess).

Later, after you knew him better, what was your favorite thing about Caleb?

E: He’s so good. I know that word is vague, and can mean a hundred things to a hundred people, but Caleb always does the right thing. He’s kind. In some ways he’s kinder and than I am, and that makes me want to be my best.

If you could go back to your school and talk to yourself before you left, what would you tell yourself?

E: Don’t be so afraid. Scream and yell, wake up everyone you can, try to make them believe you, even if the guards kill you for it. Once I’d left the compound, one of my biggest regrets is that I didn’t fight. In the moment I was terrified, I was in disbelief. I wasn’t even in my own body. It was like I was just going through the motions, packing my bag and leaving through the gate.

If you could have one wish, no questions, what would it be?

E: To forget. I always say there are things that you see that can’t be unseen. The last years of my life have been filled with love, yes, but also terror. I’ve seen friends killed, buried others, and lived in the midst of so much violence. It’s changed me. I appreciate life more because I know how quickly it can end. Still…sometimes, when I wake up from a nightmare, all I want is peace. I want to just forget.

Thanks, Eve, for talking to me today!

  4. I didn't read this only because I haven't read the series and I do plan to at some point. I figure a character conversation might contain spoilers so I skipped it.
