Unmaking Hunter Kennedy by Anne Eliot

From Goodreads:

After a car accident--an event he considers a prank gone bad--pop star, Hunter Kennedy is forced to hide out with his aunt in small-town Colorado. He’s supposed to rest, heal his scars and attend high school in disguise until the press dies down. But he only wants to get back to work.

Worse, the girl who’s been assigned to make him over into a geek is a major geek herself. Vere Roth is a chattering pixie, a blushing tornado and a complete social disaster. He’s never met a girl who’s never-been-kissed, believes in romance and thinks Hunter’s a 'nice' guy.

Funny thing is...Hunter is nice around Vere because she’s his first real friend. He also can’t seem to stop sharing his secrets or keep her out of his heart. Knowing he’d never deserve a girl as sweet as Vere, he resigns himself to the friend zone, and helps his new bestie with her own makeover.

She tortures him daily for ridiculous guy advice on how to snag her life-long crush. A guy Hunter thinks is totally wrong for Vere, and sadly, one who has taken note of Vere’s transformation.

When Vere asks her best friend for some kissing advice, Hunter can’t resist...

And that’s when things get out of control...

High School Romance, first love, sweet romance.

My Thoughts:

Hunter Kennedy: lead singer, song writer, teen idol/heart throb, guitar player. Oh and the list goes on: ignored by mom, guilted by mom, depressed, teen making stupid choices, abandoned by everyone, totally lost.  When he goes to Colorado to hide in plane site, he meets the geek Vere Roth.  Together they disguise him as friends. Vere's in love with Curtis after all.  Curtis, the football player that she's crushed on since before "the incentive" in 7th grade.  Hunter, now Dustin, is her BGF (best guy friend) and that's all.  He's also the FIRST guy ever that she could hold a conversation with or even keep from turning bright red in front of.  Could be his teasing that gets her mad.  Can you be embarrassed and mad at the same time?  Together, they remake her.  Curtis is bound to notice.  But does she want him to anymore?

Loved the premise of this book but there's so much more to this story.  It deals with a lot of teen issues that can make growing up so hard.  I loved how Hunter saw through the geekiness that is Vere and loved her before he unveiled the remake.  That love stemmed from who she was as a person.  He saw her beauty before anyone else did.  I loved how Vere saw past the teen rock star to the guy that was hurting and sad.  She was a true friend to him long before she listened to his songs.  She didn't care about the social consequences of being his friend in public (Dustin is a social outcast).

I loved how Hunter's mom is real.  She made mistakes, lots of them but she loves her boy.  It really does demonstrate the struggle that is so often real for parents as they try and make the right decisions for their children.

I loved Charlie and Jenna.  Totally fun secondary characters.  I loved that it was set in my own state of Colorado, in a little town I actually know pretty well.  My beloved Colorado Rockies made an appearance as well.  Loved that.

Why am I only giving this book 3 stars then?  The only real problem I had with this book was that it was in need of a good edit.  I thought it was too long and I thought that in some places it lagged.  I found myself searching for the story.  It's definitely worth the search, though.

I did stay up late to finish this one.  Recommend it for peeps who love YA sweet romance.

I read Indie gave this book 5 stars.  Check her review HERE.

I still have a GIVEAWAY going on for this book, if you haven't checked it out then you can HERE.

  2. This sounds really good, but I don't know if it's one I would pick up. I like the premise, but I have read too many books lately with bad editing and it really has started bothering me and it frustrates me that it really does take away from my enjoyment of books. Great review!!

  3. Already have this, and I'm excited to read it. I love that Hunter recognizes Vere's beauty before her makeover. I understand what you're saying about the length. I've read a lot of books lately that we're too long.

  4. And your Teaser Tuesday quotes were so good for this one! I love a funny romance, but 3 stars for bad editing? Maybe I should wait for something else by this author. Thanks!
