About CONJURE: Be careful what you search for...

Emma Guthrie expects this summer to be like any other in the South Carolina Lowcountry--hot and steamy with plenty of beach time alongside her best friend and secret crush, Cooper Beaumont, and Emma’s ever-present twin brother, Jack. But then a mysterious eighteenth-century message in a bottle surfaces, revealing a hidden pirate bounty. Lured by the adventure, the trio discovers the treasure and unwittingly unleashes an ancient Gullah curse that attacks Jack with the wicked flesh-eating Creep and promises to steal Cooper’s soul on his approaching sixteenth birthday.

But when a strange girl appears bent on revenge, demon dogs become a threat, and Jack turns into a walking skeleton, Emma has no choice but to learn hoodoo magic to undo the hex, all before summer—and her friends--are lost forever.

My Thoughts:

3 stars- A difference kinda magic story that's cute

This book took me a bit to get into.  I needed to settle into the story more than I normally do but then I really started to enjoy it.  Emma is a nice enough girl, who is madly in love with her twin brothers best friend.  And while that may seem like a normal plot line, this one is far from common.  As soon as the Hoodoo is added to the mix, this book takes you to hang out under the bottle tree.  (Gonna have to read it to get that one).

I like Emma, though her supposed unrequited love for Cooper is a bit tiring at times.  She may think he doesn't notice her but oh how he notices her.  Speaking of Cooper, he's my favorite character in the story.  Such a great guy with a jerk of a father - oh and there's a reason for that.  I totally LOVED how he slipped in their first kiss.  Emma should have at least suspected some feeling on his part but no she's a silly teenage girl.  Maybe too silly for me.

As for her brother, Jack, he irritated the heck out of me.  Such a whiner you have never seen.  Okay, I get it.  Your hand is turning to skin and bones minus the skill part, but really? Think I wasn't supposed to like Jack to much and it worked.

The story moved along quickly and once I got over my little bump at the beginning, I really did enjoy it.  It's a cute magic story.  Yeah it has hellion dogs in it, flesh eating disease that ....um disgusting, and some pretty sweet Hoodoo magic but really the best word for this story is cute.

If you like YA and are looking for something a little different, this might be a good one to check out.

  1. Jack's whining definitely made this less enjoyable for me, but it was cute. I kept having to remind myself how young they were too. The twins aren't quite 15 yet right? And Cooper is almost 16 which I kept getting confused about because he had his license. (Here we can't get ours until we are 16 and a half)
That's no excuse for Jacks behavior, but I could kind of see Emma's silliness because of her age. Awesome review chick!!
