Never Cry Werewolf by Heather Davis ~ Review

Source:  Purchased paperback

My Summary:

The wicked step-mother has nothing on Honey Buns, Shelby's step mom.  Yeah, she doesn't really like Shelby too much and seems to have forgotten what it means to be in high school.  So she orchestrates Shelby's departure to brat camp - um... summer camp for rich kids with issues.  Shelby's only real issue is Honey Buns but that's NOT the case for the others at camp.  Ariel seems normal but Charles has some real issues.  Then there's Austin.  He's clearly hiding something - and it's so not drugs.  He could really use Shelby's help.  Should Shelby take a chance trying to help Austin or just put in her time at Camp Crescent? But even if she can't help Austin, can she resist him?  This is so not gonna make Honey Buns happy.

My Thoughts:

3 stars - a young YA novel

Of all the paranormal books, werewolves are my weakness.  So this book jumped out at me a Borders closing sale.  It's an older book but I bought anyways.  It's been on my shelf for a while, but I finally felt the rebel pull to read something that wasn't on my LIST.  I picked up like 5 books, and read the first few pages.  This is the one that I stayed with.

So, let me just say that this really is a young YA book.  What I mean by that is that it's really a great read for say the 10 to 14 range.  I caught that feel right away but kept reading.  I enjoyed it from that perspective.

I may have become too accustomed to the older YA group and was really missing that during this book.  Things that didn't work for me included the slower pace, the ridiculous adults, and the less complex plot.  I never realized how much I love the challenge of figuring out the hints authors leave.  Um, I really wasn't a fan of Shelby so much either.  Man was she wishy-washy.   Choose!

I did like Austin a lot.  Guess he's the reason for the 3 stars.  He has a British accent that I could hear through the pages.  His word choice was so perfect.  AND he really like Shelby but also respected her fear of him.  I liked that about him.  I may have also given this the 3 stars because it was a werewolf story.  I do love those.

If you like the younger end of YA, then this is pretty good choice.

  2. This sounds like an interesting book, but I'm also used to the upper YA range. It sounds like something to pick up when I want a light read though. I love paranormal reads.
