Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Source: ARC from Harper Teen

My Summary:

Juliette believes she's a monster.  Her parents gave her over to the reestablishment because they feared her.  Her touch terrified them.  She has spend her life separated from other people for their safety.  The last 264 days she has spend in isolation with no human contact.  And then he came.  A cellmate. A boy.  A boy with eyes she remembers.  She hides in the corner afraid to hurt him but willing to help him survive this horrid place.  Juliette may be different, dangerous but she is human.  She may well be the only one left in this shattered world that still cares for others.  And that is what has him interested.

My Thoughts:

5 stars - a must read

This book captured me from page one.  Tahereh Mafi has such a beautiful writing style.  At times it's like reading poetry.  I was quite taken in by the style.  She is able to express great depths of feelings without say things like - she scared.  No she expresses the feelings in such a way that you are clear that she is scared and much more in touch with her.  I found myself drowning in her words, loving the experience as well as the story.

The world is in shatters.  Destroyed by man's overuse and people are starving.  Society as we know it is gone.  A dictatorship has stepped in promising to fix it but really not helping.  Add to that some interesting paranormal powers and Tahereh builds a very believable dystopia.

The characters are incredible.  I believe it's the writing that brings them to such life.  I knew Juliette so well.  I cared for her.  Worried about her.  Felt for her.  In the face of overwhelming discouragement, she was still good inside.  Beaten down by society for what she was, she still didn't want to hurt innocent people.  She is what is good left in this world, left to rot by the reestablishment.  Enter Adam.  I won't spoil anything but let me just say that the chemistry between these two is intense.  I love Adam.

The plot is fast and action packed.  I guessed a few parts but I didn't care because that's what I was hoping for in the end. I sailed through this book reading most of it on Halloween evening, staying up way too late for work the next day.

If you love paranormal and dystopia, then this is a must read.  Pick it up, you won't regret it.
