Publication date: October 23rd 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense
After attempting to help the FBI expose a ruthless weapons and drug dealer, Owen Fixx, Amber Kelly enters the Witness Protection Program. Unfortunately, her sister, who was once married to said drug dealer, is forced to join her—key word, forced. When Rachel grows tired of their new life and runs off with a local man, a nightmare ensues for Amber.
The only person who can help her is Gage Morgan, an edgy former police officer. The mysterious and compelling Gage must convince Amber that he is not only on her side, but he is also her best bet to stay alive.
Amber wants her sister back. What she doesn’t want is to be attracted to her sexy new protector. But in the haunted Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, desire trumps logic. And it leaves a smoldering trail for Fixx’s gunmen to follow.

Amber felt her inner feline rising and offered him a slow smile. “Do I look like a princess to you?”
“No, you’re a siren. Beautiful, dangerous, and scary as hell to any man with functioning genitalia.”
Her smile faded. “That light behind us is creeping closer.”
“Road’s improving.”
“Not that I’ve noticed.” Amber turned in her seat and almost bit her tongue off when the front tires struck a rock.
“Can we lose him?”
“Oh, we can do a lot better than that.” Reaching back, he grabbed her pack and dropped it in her lap. “We’re on a high point of land. Narrow road, no guardrails. There’s a canyon on our left. I’m going to slow down at the next bend. When I tell you to jump, tuck and roll. When you stop, head for the trees. Take this.” He handed her what looked like a small cell phone. “It’s a comm link. It has a one-mile radius. Keep it switched on, and I’ll find you.”
Never in her life could Amber recall having so many instructions fired at her in under fifteen seconds. “Are you sure—” she began.
But he cut her off with a firm, This is as slow as it gets, Snowbird. Go. Now.”
It must have been his tone. Either that, or she’d gone as crazy as he obviously was. Amber grabbed the link and her pack, shoved the door open, and jumped.
Her martial arts classes had taught her how to fall without injuring herself. However, when she factored in the momentum of a moving vehicle, everything she’d learned about a safe landing flew from her head. She hit hard, tumbled, and wound up on her stomach with her face buried in a patch of wet leaves.
“Ouch,” she mumbled.
She struggled to slow her spinning mind as she rolled over. A series of crashes reached her from the road ahead. The sound penetrated her mental haze. It also got her moving.
Head for the trees, Gage had said. Which trees? There were an awful lot of them on this side of the road.
Working herself into a crouch, Amber switched on the link and waited for the light to blink green. When it did, she zipped it inside her pocket, hoisted her pack, and struck out for the woods.
She heard a final crunch of metal on rock and knew exactly what Gage had done. He’d shot his truck over the edge of the cliff into a fathomless canyon where no one in their right mind would dare venture at night. If there happened to be a lake at the bottom, so much the better.
How long would the diversion last, Amber wondered as she ran. Two or three hours? Until morning?
A horrible thought suddenly occurred to her. Halting, she spun to look back. Gage’s truck had gone into the canyon. But what if it hadn’t been empty when it left the road?

Jenna Ryan was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, but spent her childhood in several different areas of the country. She began creating stories before she could read. Growing up, romance alone had a strong appeal, but as it turned out, romantic suspense was the perfect fit. After all, what could be better than adding the darker elements of a mystery to a romantic relationship? And, oh, the fun of those secondary characters. Over the years, she has worked in several different industries, including modeling, interior design and travel, however, writing has always been her passion - even if she didn't go about it in the usual way. She earned a degree in Creative Writing from the University of Victoria in British Columbia and currently lives in a semi-rural setting fifteen minutes from that city.

Night's Blaze (Dark Kings, #5) by Donna Grant ~ Review

That one simple kiss slayed him as nothing in his very, very long life had ever done. It physically hurt him to release her and turn his back on everything she offered, but it was for the best.

The Rhys who has existed for centuries is gone. Stripped of his ability to shift forms, Rhys can no longer embody the majestic, powerful dragon he was at birth. Cut off from his heritage by one of his own, this Dragon King must remain a man, haunted by demons who torment his every waking moment. The darkness would swallow him whole . . . except a woman so beautiful and haunted becomes the one beam of light in his world...

Lily Ross is taking the first step in building a new life for herself. Still reeling from a relationship that nearly broke her spirit, Lily is wary of her attraction to brawny, brooding Rhys. The passion burning so brightly between them is a potent temptation, but any entanglement is destined to end in disaster. Yet when a spectre from Lily’s past threatens their growing bond, Rhys is forced to choose with his heart, or lose this woman who has become his one chance at salvation...

I've been wondering about Rhys for a while now, wanting his story.  When he was hurt, I was scanning the book blurbs ahead to find his story.  Needless to say, I wanted to read this one!

This book was more emotional for me than the others have been.  As Rhys struggled with the results of his injury and Lily's past become clear, it all just got to me.  I do love it when I'm that attached to the characters.  I did want to do in Lily's ex and one other (spoiler so I can't tell you) - and I do mean do in.  Lay them both flat with some dragon magic or something - they both deserve it.

This book proved that these stories are not a pattern because this one has some shocks in it.  My heart broke for Rhys.  His poor yellow dragon self.  I wanted to just hug him.  And I was so proud of Lily and her ability to fight through some pretty hard emotions to stand strong.  Good girl.

Strong characters and a great story just happen in Donna Grant stories.  I can't seem to read them fast enough and I know they will be on that reread list that I go back to when I just need something good.

I can't get enough.  I go from one to the next, usually right after closing the last page of one.  If you haven't discovered this series and you love paranormal romance, you need to give these a go.

The Space Merchants by Wendie Nordgren ~ Series Review

This is a little different review from my usual ones, but since I binge read this series and can't really be sure to discuss specific books separately, I figured doing a review of the entire series so far was the way to go. The Space Merchants is an adult sci-fi romance series with a reverse harem, and somehow these books genuinely enthralled me until I completed book 5 (which is where I have officially caught up with the series and now await the next installment).

So here's the thing: This series is slow, as a whole. There are serious pacing issues. Books one through three are very long and it feels like not much happens, sometimes even as things ARE happening. Then in books 4 and 5, things seem to be picking up...which is good. But SOME things also seem to be taking a turn for the meh plot-wise. And the writing, as could probably be inferred by the fact that the pacing is a mess, leaves so much to be desired.

That said, I enjoy reading most of the characters. The main character, Teagan, is by no means anywhere close to the top of my list of favorites -- but she is entertaining. So are her interactions. And her family and husbands and friends are, too. There's really only one exception in the whole series and I won't say WHO for the sake of not spoiling, but I am not liking this certain controlling female character at all.

In reading these books, I'd be thinking halfway through each individual book (save for book 4) that I'd take a break from the series once I finished the installment. But then I'd finish the book and NEED to pick up the next one. I'm not quite sure what was so entrancing about these books, but it had an affect on me and is worth noting.

The romance...has its moments but also has its lulls. Kind of like the series as a whole. I like a majority of Teagan's husbands (though I have a soft spot for Nico...and her fourth husband is growing on me), and for the most part they can be so sweet. But they can also be frustrating.

Overall, while I wouldn't say The Space Merchants is a favorite series, I do like it well enough to be keeping an eye out for the next installment. Things really seem to be picking up, and the series has a quality to it that piques the curiosity and hooks in deep.

3 stars - Worth a shot if you're looking for some entertaining sci-fi romance (with a reverse harem!)

Hot Blooded (Dark Kings, #4) by Donna Grant ~ Review

The Dark Kings soldier on in their fight to preserve their dragon magic. But eternal doom is always close behind…

His name is Laith. To most, he’s known as the owner of a local pub near Dreagan. But little do his patrons know that beneath his handsome, charming exterior Laith has the heart and soul of a Dragon King—one who wields control by keeping his friends close and his enemies, just across the border, closer. Until a mysterious stranger enters the picture, and sets his whole world off course…

Iona is a woman with a mission: To learn the truth about her dead father. She’s returned to Scotland only to learn that she’s part of an ancient pact with Dreagan—one that will threaten the fragile peace with the Dragon Kings. Gorgeous, sly Iona isn’t like anyone Laith has ever met before . . . and she harbors a secret that others would kill to possess. Will she complete him—or destroy him? Passion always comes with a price…

I'm a very moody reader.  A reading slump ended with this series and I've been driven to just keep reading it.  Just not interested in anything else.  Hot Blooded was no exception.

Laith is a Dragon King that runs the local pub.  He's drawn to Iona, who comes to town to figure out what happened to her father.  She knows nothing of the Dragon Kings or the pack her family has had with them for generations.  What she remembers from her father is not exactly what she learns as she talks to people in the local town about him.  Something more is going on here.

Indeed it is and a lot of it revolves around the very hot guy who runs the pub.  Laith wants to protect Iona but how are things she's around getting out to their enemies.  Something is definitely going on.

I love this world and these characters.  I love seeing the characters from previous books as they interact with the current stars.  I love that they support each other.  I love the dragons and the secrets.  I really want the overarching story to move a bit faster but that's the only flaw I find.  Really the books happen just days from each other so I shouldn't complain.  But I do want some secrets discovered and some serious dark fae behind kicked.

This is one of those addictive series' that you can get lost in and forget there are even other book choices out there.  I just want more.  I go from one to the next and can't get enough.

It's a great paranormal world and if you haven't given it a chance, you should!
