The Trouble With Mistletoe by Jill Shalvis

Source:  Received a copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

If she has her way ...

Willa Davis is wrangling puppies when Keane Winters stalks into her pet shop with frustration in his chocolate-brown eyes and a pink bedazzled cat carrier in his hand. He needs a kitty sitter, stat. But the last thing Willa needs is to rescue a guy who doesn’t even remember her ...

He’ll get nothing but coal in his stocking.

Saddled with his great-aunt’s Feline from Hell, Keane is desperate to leave her in someone else’s capable hands. But in spite of the fact that he’s sure he’s never seen the drop-dead-gorgeous pet shop owner before, she seems to be mad at him ...

Unless he tempers “naughty” with a special kind of nice ...

Willa can’t deny that Keane’s changed since high school: he’s less arrogant, for one thing—but can she trust him not to break her heart again? It’s time to throw a coin in the fountain, make a Christmas wish—and let the mistletoe do its work ...

I loved this book.  It's adorable and a great holiday read.

The second book in the series, this one can stand alone.  At the core of this series is a close group of friends are always there for each other, no matter what.  This book told Willa's story but all the gang was there to help her through the craziness that is her life and the struggle she has to accept love.

Keane was the sexy jock in high school that Willa had a wild crush on.  His life appeared to be totally put together...*cough* don't believe that though.  Willa on the other hand came from foster care and literally had nothing.  Yeah, he doesn't remember her.  Nothing.  He's got nothing.  BUT once you understand him, you'll get why.  But it does make for an interesting way for them to start off.  She has some serious attitude going and he's majorly confused.  Of course, a cat brings them together.

And I do love PITA (not her real name and no I won't tell you why she's called that - gonna have to read it to find out).  PITA is the typical grumpy cat (the kind I really dislike) that will bite you without warning and leave presents in your shoes.  Poor Keane is stuck watching her for his Aunt.  And poor PITA has her whole life turned upside down.  It's adorable really.  And I ended up loving the cat.  ME?  The dog lover.  Yeah, PITA captured my heart.

So did Keane.  I fell hard for that boy.  He's a great guy and he's falling for Willa.  He never thought he would want love in his life.  He grew up with parents that didn't really want him.  They had had their children and he was a surprise they didn't much appreciate.  And trouble.  He was all trouble.  Mostly, he was in need of attention.  Now he doesn't think he needs anyones attention.  Yeah, you know what happens there, don't you!

Together these two are struggling to figure out how to be an adult after surviving their upbringing at the same time they're trying to not fall in love with each other.  The struggle between them felt real.  It wasn't a suddenly fixed thing, they went back and forth trying to figure things out.  But I never felt the heavy angst and pain that a lot of romance books have.  This one was just real.  Two people trying to figure things out.

The group of friends and holidays made this one extra fun.  Between the wedding for the poodles, the Christmas decorations that blew up in Willa's shop and the friends meddling all the time, this book had a lot of laugh out loud moments.  I looked forward to reading time and I didn't want to stop.

Just a great read.  Don't miss this one.

One Snowy Night (Heartbreaker Bay, #2.5) by Jill Shalvis

New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis returns to Heartbreaker Bay with a fun and festive holiday novella!

It’s Christmas Eve and Rory Andrews is desperate to get home to the family she hasn’t seen in years. Problem is, her only ride to Lake Tahoe comes in the form of the annoyingly handsome Max Stranton, and his big, goofy, lovable dog Carl.

Hours stuck in a truck with the dead sexy Max sounds like a fate worse than death (not), but Rory’s out of options. She’s had a crush on Max since high school and she knows he’s attracted to her, too. But they have history… and Max is the only one who knows why it went south.

They’ve done a good job of ignoring their chemistry so far, but a long road trip in a massive blizzard might be just what they need to face their past… and one steamy, snowy night is all it takes to bring Max and Rory together at last.

Teaser...

"What?"  she said, wrapping her arms around herself.  "You've never seen cold nipples before?"
Yes, but not ones that made his mouth water to taste.  Kiss.  Nibble.  Suck into his mouth...."Did you see any bears?"
Rolling her eyes, she pulled a hair tie from around her wrist and used it to contain the wet mass of waves on top of her head. (Kindle location 411)

I liked Rory a lot from the previous book in this series.  She's feisty and determined with lots of spine.  So I was really excited for this little novella.  That being said, it can be read as stand alone.  It's not at all dependent on the rest of the series.

While I enjoyed this story very much, it was just too short.  The first three quarters feels just right and I was really happy living in the pages.  But it drew up and come to conclusion way too quickly.

Max is a great guy and I really reading from his point of view.  Sexy and one of the good ones.  He went to High School with Rory but they weren't friends.  Lab partners, yes, but not friends.  That's where the problems between them developed.  And that's where they needed to spend a little bit more time dealing with things.  Yes, they'd known each other for a while through South Bark where Rory works but I just wish...what I really wish is that the story lasted past Christmas Day.  This story takes place on Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day.  I just wanted a little bit more.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this story.  It just left me wanting more.

Great characters, great writing, and a snowy holiday story - don't miss that!

Fire in You (Wait for You, #6)Source: e-ARCs provided in exchange for honest reviews.

Fire in You (Wait for You #6) by J. Lynn

From the # 1 New York Times and International bestselling author, Jennifer L. Armentrout writing as J.Lynn, comes a richly moving story about heartbreak and guilt, second chances and hope. Full of familiar, fan-favorite characters and no two people more deserving of a happy ending, Fire In You will burn bright beyond the last page…

Jillian Lima’s whole world was destroyed in a span of a few hours. The same night her childhood love, Brock ‘the Beast’ Mitchell, broke her heart, her life was irrevocably altered by the hand of a stranger with a gun. It takes six years to slowly glue together the shattered pieces of her life, but Jillian is finally ready to stop existing in a past full of pain and regret. She takes a job at her father’s martial arts Academy and she’s going out on her first date since a failed relationship that was more yuck than yum. Jillian is determined to start living.

She just never expected Brock to be a part of her life again. But he’s firmly back in her life before she knows it, and not only is he older, he’s impossibly more handsome, more teasing and more everything. And when he sees Jillian, he’s no longer capable of thinking of her as the little girl who was his shadow growing up or the daughter of the man who gave him a second chance at life. He sees the woman who’d always been there for him, the one person who believed in him no matter what.

Brock knows she’s the one he should’ve made his, and what begins as a tentative friendship quickly turns to red-hot chemistry that sparks a flame that burns brighter than lust. Falling for Brock again risks more than her heart, because when the past sorrow-filled and guilt-ridden past resurfaces, and a web of lies threatens to rip them apart, the fallout could lay waste to everything they’ve fought to build together, and destroy the dreams of those they care most about.

The Wait for You series has been near and dear to my heart since book 1 released in 2013. I've been both anticipating and dreading this final installment--excited for Brock and Jillian's story, but also not wanting this series to come to a close. That said, Jennifer L. Armentrout did this series justice with a beautiful finale.

Brock and Jillian were intriguing to me. They've known each other for a good long while. She's loved him while he's treated her like a little sister. I was looking forward to seeing how their dynamic flipped from THAT to something romantic, and I was very much pleased with the reality within Fire in You. We got to see exactly that--Brock's interest turned toward winning Jillian over for himself--but we also got so much more. Their story is so deep and intricate, and I LOVED that about this story.

And on that note, Fire in You was so well written. It was emotional and intense and I literally could not put this book down. I kid you not, I read the whole thing in one sitting. My need to know both the details of what had happened between Brock and Jillian in the past and how things would work out for them for the future was too strong for me to doing anything BUT read straight through.

The romance was the perfect mixture of sweetness and deliciously sexy moments. Brock and Jillian are one of those couples that clicks so well, and reading them together was lovely. And I really enjoyed seeing them work through their issues. They had a lot of baggage to deal with, both individually and together, but they talked it through, which I liked.

My only minor gripe is that I felt like sometimes there was so much focus on Brock and Jillian's past that their present kind of got glossed over. This wasn't for the entire book, it was only for part of it, but it was still a small something I noticed. That said, as a whole, I loved this book.

Overall, Fire in You is an emotional, intense, and romantic finale to the Wait for You series. It can definitely hold up well as a standalone, but we also got happy glimpses of the characters from the past books and it was terrific. But most importantly, Brock and Jillian's story was beautiful and I loved it. I definitely recommend picking this one up if you're a fan of contemporary romance--whether you've read the previous books or not (though those books are FANTASTIC, so you should really read them all if you haven't already)!

4 stars - Emotional, intense, and romantic--a contemporary romance I definitely recommend!

Once again Jennifer L Armentrout has me staying up late to read. It’s a common occurrence when I read her books. Start and finish. Why? It’s the experience of reading one of her books.

Her books always include incredible characters, real stories, great writing and that something more. Always that something more. And I walk away trying to decide what's this magic that only Jen seems to be able to use to craft a story of complete perfection.

Characters. I love this series and all the varied characters that feel so real that I expect to find them at the local IHOP eating pancakes on Sunday mornings. The whole cast is around in this one and I loved getting all the updates on them after a long period of time has passed. But the characters that held my heart in this one were Brock and Jillian.

Jillian is quirky and a book lover. She’s been through a life changing trauma and it’s time to get her life back. Clearly she hasn’t been herself since most of her books are living at her parents house! Say what? She brings them home. It’s okay, no worries. But I love her insecurities and her self talk. It’s real and I loved it. I was so happy for her as she started making choices to get back to her life. It made me happy. Except for Grady. That didn’t make me happy. At one point, I yelled at her and texted Jess. WTH are you thinking, women!? But, alas, I shouldn’t have worried because Brock was BRILLIANT. Brilliant I say!

Brock is a gem. He did something that he just can’t take back. He truly wishes he could. But he will have his friendship back with Jillian. I adored all the little things we discovered about him. What he’s been doing. What’s been important to him. I loved him. Yes, I was not happy about a fiancee. What is that?? But that too is okay. And actually, I was so happy about how everything worked out. Brock brings her pumpkin lattes and other treats. He doesn’t give up on her. And at one point, he wouldn’t leave. I wanted to hug him! Well played Brock. Well played.

As you can tell, I loved their story. These two have been friends ever since they met when she was 8 and he was fourteen. No one knew the other better but then that changed in a horrible fashion. And Brock wants it back. Jillian doesn’t. It’s real. None of the circumstances that make their story are contrived. I could see it. I did see it as it unfolded on the pages of this book. And that’s the art of this author. Her stories live on the pages and hold me captive until the very last word.

I love the characters. I love the story. I love the writing. And I really love that something more, the JLA magic. I try to define it but it seems impossible to put into words. All I know is that her books don’t feel forced. They feel real. The story develops genuinely. The couple gets time to be a couple. The details are resolved, it’s complete. And I always know these characters are real. They’re my friends because I’ve gotten to know them. It’s a perfect pattern that works so well to create a sleepless night.

You’ll want this one. You’ll be happy in the pages of this book. You’ll love these characters. You’ll cheer for them. You’ll sigh when the last page is done. And you’ll be sad that this book is the last in this series. But the good news is that it’s not the last JLA book. Many more of those to come, thank goodness.

Too Hot To Handle (Romancing The Clarksons, #1) by Tessa Bailey ~ Excerpt, Dream Cast & Giveaway

Previously released as an eBook in May 2016, the first book in Tessa Bailey’s Romancing the Clarksons series is now available in print for the first time!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Title: TOO HOT TO HANDLE
Author: Tessa Bailey
Series: Romancing The Clarksons, #1
On Sale: November 29, 2016
Publisher: Forever
Mass Market: $5.99 USD
eBook: $2.99 USD

When rescue looks like a whole lot of trouble . . .

The road trip was definitely a bad idea. Having already flambéed her culinary career beyond recognition, Rita Clarkson is now stranded in God-Knows-Where, New Mexico, with a busted-ass car and her three temperamental siblings, who she hasn't seen in years. When rescue shows up—six-feet-plus of hot, charming sex on a motorcycle—Rita's pretty certain she's gone from the frying pan right into the fire . . .

Jasper Ellis has a bad boy reputation in this town, and he loathes it. The moment he sees Rita, though, Jasper knows he's about to be sorely tempted. There's something real between them. Something raw. And Jasper has only a few days to show Rita that he isn't just for tonight—he's forever.

Dream Cast

When I cast TOO HOT TO HANDLE in my head (and on my Pinterest boards o’course!) I used a more introverted version of Emilia Clarke as Rita Clarkson. All the shiny effervesce and beauty of a brunette Emilia, with more dark makeup and clothing. This is the picture I sent to my editor when casting for the cover, because I think it captures Rita’s personality:

As for Jasper, he is described in the book as a young, revamped Matthew McConaughey and I think his personality totally matches that of a young carefree (non naked bongo playing) version of the actor. I promise he doesn’t say “alright, alright, alright,” but he does have that cool guy, ladies love me spirit. Scott Porter from Hart of Dixie would be my choice to play Jasper in a film J

Excerpt

“So.” He plunked his beer down on the bar. “Where were you four headed in that big, rusty Suburban before Hurley reeled you in?”
She looked pensive as her shit-stomping boots started to sway back and forth, bumping the wooden rungs of the stool. “We need to be in Coney Island by New Year’s Day. So we can jump into the Atlantic Ocean.”
“Why—what?” He dropped onto the stool beside her, his drink forgotten on the bar. “That’s pretty high on the list of things I didn’t expect.”
“Oh, I know the feeling.” A beat passed. “It was our mother’s last wish.”
“I’m sorry.”
She nodded, brushing her hair back in a jerky motion, as if she were uncomfortable having someone’s undivided attention. He’d never had cause to use the word preposterous before, but that was the only way he could describe her lack of confidence. Despite the inappropriate name, the Liquor Hole was his life’s work, and, at the moment, it was nothing more than an unworthy backdrop for Rita. And, God, he was staring at her hands like an aggressive palm reader. “Most mothers want to avoid having their children turn into floating ice sculptures. What was her reason?”
“Good question.” A hint of sadness winked in her eyes, and Jasper wished he’d let the subject drop. This was what happened when he avoided talking about sex. He stumbled right into deceased parents. And yet he wasn’t sorry. Not even a little bit. He wanted to know everything. “I think…she meant it as some sort of symbolic bonding experiment. But I don’t know. We’re kind of unbondable.”
“Got the feeling I interrupted a near-melee this afternoon.”
“Aaron called my soufflé decent.” A strand of dark hair caught on her lips when she shook her head. It took one hundred percent of his impulse control not to tug it away, but she beat him to it, anyhow. “It sounds silly now.”
“Nah.” Jasper couldn’t help leaning in to get a whiff of cooking spices. “He would have had it coming just for dressing like a preacher on a weekday.”
Another one of those quiet, smoky laughs. “I guess there’s a fine line between politician and preacher.”
“Politician?” Jasper shivered, then recalled the threat Rita’s brother had leveled at his head back on the highway. “Still, I can’t help but like him for wanting you safe from a stranger. He can’t be all that bad if he worries about you.”
“Worried might be an exaggeration,” Rita said.
When her golden-brown gaze lit on his mouth, Jasper realized he’d moved into her personal space without any conscious thought. One of her knees brushed the denim covering his hip and, God help him, if the bar were empty he would’ve been between her split thighs before she could call for Jesus. For someone who hadn’t felt more than a passing appreciation for the opposite sex in years, his libido was sure trying to play catch-up tonight.
“What are you thinking about?”
Lie. He had to lie. I want to strip you down and fuck you on this seat, but I’m trying my hand at being a gentleman, was not an acceptable line. It was too aggressive when she seemed spooked merely from his close proximity. But she was leaving, leaving his town tomorrow, and the slow-game option had been ambitious for Jasper when he knew nothing about it. So he’d tell the truth while leaving out the oh-so-dirty reality in his pants. “I was thinking it would have been a goddamn shame if you’d broken down one town over.” His voice was gravel, so he cleared it. “More than a shame. I’m kind of finding it hard to think about, if you want to know the truth.”
For long moments, he couldn’t hear a single sound in the loud bar. No music, no crunching ice or raucous laughter. And, somehow, he knew she couldn’t hear the noise, either. It was there in the perplexity of her expression. He expected her to call bullshit or make a joke, but she didn’t. She shocked him instead.
“I’ll think I’ll take that kiss now.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.
