The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, #1) by Gena Showalter ~ Review

Source:  Purchased audiobook

His powers - Inhuman...

His passion - Beyond immortal...

All her life, Ashlyn Darrow has been tormented by voices from the past. To end the nightmare, she has come to Budapest seeking help from men rumored to have supernatural abilities, not knowing she'll be swept into the arms of Maddox, their most dangerous member -- a man trapped in a hell of his own.

Neither can resist the instant hunger than calms their torments... and ignites an irresistible passion. But every heated touch and burning kiss will edge them closer to destruction -- and a soul-shattering test of love...

Though they carry an eternal curse, the Lords of the Underworld are irresistibly seductive -- and unimaginably powerful...

Review...

Fairytales.  You know those stores that overcome impossible odds to have a happy ending?  And then add the darker images of the real fairytales before modern peeps got hold of them.  That's this book.  And the topic of fairytales even comes up as a huge part of the story.

Maddox.  Poor Maddox.  The curse he carries is a living hell.  He paid for the crimes of his demon many times over but still suffers from it.  And the two friends that must participate are held just as firmly by this cruel curse.  I pitied him...all three of them.

When Maddox meets the peculiar Ashlyn, there is an instant connection.  Such is the case in paranormal romance and it fit them well.  Both are trapped in circumstances that make their lives beyond difficult and both need the other to approach normalcy.  It fits and I liked it.

Both are strong and hard headed.  I did admire Ashlyn, her willingness to stand up to the demon violence.  She forgives easily and has a nurturing heart.  Having lived as a freak her whole life, she is desperate for the home she can have with Maddox.  But she does make him earn it.  He doesn't want to want her.  Resisting her doesn't seem to keep her from his thoughts and desires.  Her watching his nightly torture steals his heart and the heart of the demon that possesses him.  Then there is nothing he won't give to this women.  Loved that.

Definitely want more!  May have another obsession on my hands.  We'll see if I can read anything else or if the next book in this series demands to be read.
