Deception Island by Brynn Kelly ~ Early Review & ARC Giveaway

Source:  Received early copy from publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

A stolen boy

A haunted soldier

A cornered con woman…

Rafe Angelito thought he was done with the demons from his past—until his son is kidnapped. Blackmailed into abducting an American heiress, the legionnaire soon finds himself trapped in paradise with a fiery, daring beauty who's nothing he expects…and everything he desires. But when he uncovers her own dark secret, Rafe realizes he's made a critical mistake—one that could cost him everything.

Playing body double for a spoiled socialite was supposed to be Holly Ryan's ticket to freedom. But when she's snatched off her yacht by a tall, dark and dangerous stranger, the not-quite-reformed con artist will make a desperate play to turn her captor from enemy to ally, by any means necessary.

Yet as scorching days melt into sultry nights, Holly is drawn to the mysterious capitaine, with his unexpected sense of honor and his searing touch. When they're double-crossed, they'll have to risk trusting each other in ways they never imagined…because in this deadly game of deception, it's their lives—and hearts—on the line.

Review...

I had the opportunity to read this one early.  Before the cover and blurb, I went into this read blind.  It was only later that I saw the cover and read the blurb.  It was an unusual experience that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Full of suspense and heat, this book captivated me from the very first page. It had me turning pages rapidly, needing more, until I had devoured every last word.  I was frankly surprised at how fast and completely this book drew me in.  I needed to understand the characters and what was really going on.  There were secrets on both sides and I wanted to know everyone of them.

I love to try and figure things out and this one had surprising twists and turns.  Putting it down was not going to happen as events played out far different than I had expected.  I really enjoy that in a book.  I read so much that it's very hard to surprise me but I was surprised.  It was great.

Making the story even better were the strong, dynamic characters.  I knew there was more than what I saw.  Rafe.  Talk about a bad boy, he's a real life living bad boy with the broken past and determined present.  He captured my heart.  Holly took a little longer but I admired her strength and will.  Each a puzzle to figure out, I was happy to piece them together.

I was surprised that this was a debut book.  The writing, story, and characters were all polished and enjoyable.  It was a needed change of pace for me and I'm so glad I had the chance to read it.  I'd take a chance on this author again in a heartbeat.
