This is a stand alone novel that is an adult spin-off of the Lux Series You do not need to read a Lux book to read Obsession and vice versa.

He’s arrogant, domineering, and... To. Die. For.

Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.

Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something... unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.

Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life… or is it Hunter?

5 stars - A sexy Arum with a bad attitude and very talented hands will have you flipping those pages at top speed!

I must start with Hunter. He will be compared to Daemon but he isn't Daemon. His attitude is much worse than Daemon's. A hired killer of Luxen for the DOD, Hunter makes no excuses for what he does. So when the DOD put him on babysitting duty, he's pissed off. You really don't want to piss Hunter off. When he's mad, he is one powerful Arum. But here's the deal, Serena doesn't put up with his attitude despite the fact that he can or may kill her. She mouths off to him and he loves it. She's feisty. Might just be the only weapon he can't defeat.

Hunter really appeals to me. He has the all male "I can kick your ass" attitude down and in his case is very true. He does what he wants but the death of his sister has caused him to adjust what he wants. Now he may have found someone else that changes what he wants. Oh and this guy knows sexy. There is so much sexy in this book. As good a fighter as he is, he's a better lover and damn that's saying something.

Serena is a strong, feisty women in a small package. I love how she stands up to him, despite her total inability to take him on in ANY way. Doesn't stop her. That appeals to me and him. They're cute together. Her stomping her foot (not really but you get the idea) and him laughing at her useless efforts. While there is nothing funny about the death and insanity that Serena's life has taken, I found myself laughing at these two together. Jennifer's use of humor to develop her characters into real people is just one of the reasons she is my favorite author.

The story starts off quickly and never slows down. I was very impressed with how well this story stood on it's own without any need to know anything from the Lux series. I was also so impressed with how much of what I had believed about the Luxen world was turned on it's head in this book. The Arum are bad, right? Yeah, they are killers of the Lux but maybe not for the reason I thought. There certainly are two sides to every story and damn if this isn't a brilliant addition to the puzzle.

I think this book is supposed to hold me over until August when Origin comes out but it only made me WANT that book more. Little hints were left that have me desperate to get more of the story. I love this alien world and all it's complexity.

Overall, I loved it. Couldn't get enough of it. Wanted more. I'm wondering if there will be more of this adult Arum/Lux world. I hope so. I would so be down for that.

If you've read the Lux series, then this is a must read NOW. If you prefer the adult paranormal world, then this is a must read NOW. If you love hot guys that turn their attitude into protectiveness, then this is a must read NOW. Yeah, I think you're getting the point. Read it NOW.

  2. Okay, I'm late getting in on this (and I'm not sure I'm even posting in the right place) but I love the series. Looks like today is Onyx day. I loved this one, too, although nothing beats Obsidian (at least for me).

Still love all that Katy and Daemon banter; although I wish there was less time spent with the new character, Blake. Daemon's continuous "accidental"/wrong names for Blake are hilarious, though.

    1. Since this is also an Obsession day (maybe?), I'll make a comment about that as well. I liked Obsession, but I'm such a Daemon Black and YA fan, that it felt like I was cheating if that makes any sense. Obsession is a great read, though, and gives a nice perspective from the other "team". It's a standalone but I will say that it's still important to read it. And that's all I'm saying about that. ;)

  3. Ah Obsession. A bunch of authors make these guys - these strong willed, I have to have you guys - come across as total creepster stalker types. JLAs are always hot.

    I'm looking at you, Hunter.

  4. Ahh Obsession! After reading The Lux series, I never thought I would enjoy reading an Arum's POV but wowza Hunter is one swoon-worthy guy!

  5. Obsession really changed my views on Arum and now I don't know what to think! But Hunter is more or less like Daemon and so I loved him :)
