So my book boyfriend for the week is

West Leavitt!

DEEPER Synopsis:

In this New Adult debut by Robin York, a college student is attacked online and must restore her name—and stay clear of a guy who’s wrong for her, but feels so right.

When Caroline Piasecki’s ex-boyfriend posts their sex pictures on the Internet, it destroys her reputation as a nice college girl. Suddenly her once-promising future doesn’t look so bright. Caroline tries to make the pictures disappear, hoping time will bury her shame. Then a guy she barely knows rises to her defense and punches her ex to the ground.

West Leavitt is the last person Caroline needs in her life. Everyone knows he’s shady. Still, Caroline is drawn to his confidence and swagger—even after promising her dad she’ll keep her distance. On late, sleepless nights, Caroline starts wandering into the bakery where West works.

They hang out, they talk, they listen. Though Caroline and West tell each other they’re “just friends,” their feelings intensify until it becomes impossible to pretend. The more complicated her relationship with West gets, the harder Caroline has to struggle to discover what she wants for herself—and the easier it becomes to find the courage she needs to fight back against the people who would judge her.

When all seems lost, sometimes the only place to go is deeper.

Why?  Hmmmm....lots of reasons.  I love how he takes care of people he cares for.  I love how he tries so hard to do the right thing even while he's working himself to death and breaking a few laws to just make life better in the future.  I love how he is not Caroline's friend.  I love how he calls her Caro.  I love how he listens.  I love how he hides his own pain and fights the attraction because he believes it's what's best for her.  I love watching him make bread at the bakery...his sexy grace.  I love how he makes things real - calling BS when you feed him a line.  I love how he just couldn't help himself but to kiss Caro.

Mini review

The Characters...This one is very much a character driven story.  Both leads are strong.  Caroline didn't follow her feeling when her boyfriend took sexy pictures of them.  She let him take them and then when they broke up she didn't ask to delete them.  She trusted him even though her gut told her otherwise.  She pays for that.  It bleeds her and most of her friends abandon her.  She avoids getting help and tries to fix things herself.  But she finds the strength to get up and go to class.  She knows people are talking about her but she faces it.  She doesn't run.  She only hides in her studies, her one friend and the bakery where West is.  She see's what makes her stronger and she gravitates to it.  And while she knows West is all wrong for her and is definitely hiding things, she falls for him.

And West.  He has so many secrets you will never find them all.  He's trying to fit into a world he wasn't raised in.  He's from the wrong side of a totally different town fighting his way up as best he can.  He holds down multiple jobs, studies, and may be involved in some illegal things but he's making it work.  If he could just get Caro off his mind.  This guy has a strong loyalty to his family.  He's smart and tells it like it is.  Better than most law abiding people, he is literally building his future.

Needless to say, I love them both.  Their banter is so enjoyable and even though they profess to not be friends, I really enjoy their friendship.

The Writing...A little different style, this book has an almost personal feel to it.  The characters are telling the story as much as they're showing us the story.  It's an interesting mix that works well for the personalities of Caro and West.  The author writes long chapters alternating POV between the MCs.  I found I enjoyed being in West's head the most.  He's a very real thinker.  It is what it is.  I totally loved how he resisted the relationship only to realize his feeling.  Adorable.

Should You Read It...The short answer is yes.  If you enjoy a great story with great slow burning chemistry, then this is a great choice.

The baking intrigues me, too, but the best thing about this story seems to be Caroline's development from someone who just goes with the flow to someone who can stick up for herself. =)
