What’s one little spell?

When you’re new to magic, one spell can be the difference between getting what you want...and ruining the lives of everyone you love.

Sixteen-year-old Madison has just embraced her magical powers. The trick now is learning how to control them. She and her boyfriend -and fellow witch- can’t even enjoy a simple kiss without getting shocked when their powers collide. Instead of mastering her new skills, though, Madison is stuck watching her kid brother and doing chores.

But being a witch does have its benefits. With a simple spell, Madison instantly conjures the help she needs around the house. Or so she thinks. Her idea of “help” invites trouble of its own as a pair of dangerous yet enticing beings enter her life. When a classmate disappears soon afterwards, Madison discovers she's the next victim of a threat she's powerless to resist...and there’s nothing it won’t kill to make her surrender.

Caught in the crossfire between two dashing but deadly creatures, Madison must figure out which one to trust and how to rid her world of the other—before one of them destroys her and everyone she cares about.

My Thoughts:

3 stars - A witch just learning her way but doesn't really have a clue.

The one of the things I really enjoy about YA books is that they demonstrate how making poor choices, even well intended ones, can end up really messing things up.  This story does a really good job of showing that principle in a fun paranormal way.

I really enjoyed book one, Embrace.  I reviewed it pretty early on in my blogging days and it was a real favorite.  I have since shied away from witch stories and that's too bad.  If I hadn't already read Embrace, I wouldn't have agreed to read this one.  And I would have missed a sweet, fun and very YA story.

I love Madison.  She's so cute and innocent in her efforts to avoid doing her chores.  It's a crazy idea to summon a fae to clean your house - well it is from an adult brain, but it makes perfect sense to a teen.  I'm envisioning all kinds of problems coming from this decision and of course that happens.  It's a great lesson for teens without the lecture.

I also loved the lessons on trying to control her powers long enough to kiss her boyfriend, Isaac.  Talk about "build in parent controls".  I loved it.  And I still love Isaac.  He was so mysterious in the first book and he really still has some of that.  He really cares for Madison and I enjoyed their relationship.  He tries to teach her and he's so patient with her.  I love him.

The story is fast if a bit predictable.  I read it in an afternoon.

If you enjoy the classic YA genre, mixed with the paranormal world, then this is the book/series for you.

About the author:

A little about myself: I write young adult and middle grade novels. I love finding new stories that keep me up late reading. While my favorite genre is fantasy, if the book is beautifully written with characters that come alive I’m all over it.

My debut novel EMBRACE is now available from Omnific Publishing.
